language settings or correct but opens with Japanese highlighted.

I recently installed to Office 2003. Had old version of 2000. Now, when
opening a Word document, it opens highlighted as Japanese. I checked my
computer language settings and it has English US. I have to click on Windows
to make it readable. I've checked the settings in Word, and it has english
as well. But I can't get it to open in English. Does anyone have a fix for
it?
