Home Network Issue
Dear All,
Got a weird one here....(well two actually)..... When I browse the missus machine, it is showing to shared folders that the hard-drive doesn't physically exist in her machine now, and yet I can't seem to delete it? Is this a problem with my machine not updating what it should see, or her machine not telling my machine the correct information? Also, I've got a machine that is on a wireless connection in another room, is it normal for it to disappear sometimes, and I have to refresh to get it to show again? even if it isn't showing I can still type '\\computername' and it will allow me to access it? Probably something simple, but hunting around on 'Google' didn't turn much up as my 'Search Terms' obviously didn't match what I need to type to get my results... Hope someone can enlighten me with this issue... Regards Paul. |

Re: Home Network Issue
on the first problem, possible answers are: 1. you dont understand what you are seeing such as c$ or administrative share, possibly, and you dont want to delete those, 2. I dont understand what you are seeing 3 you haven't provided us with enough information such as the mystery folder names you see to make an informed diagnosis. on the second problem which is almost as vague, I assume you mean you dont see it in the network anymore. you need to work on the wireless machines connection to the wireless router. and select the connection as the one and only preferred connection and always connect to that connection when in range. and..change the channel from the default 6 to like 11 on both ends because someone elses nearby wifi network is blowing it out, or other rf source such as your own microwave. once you have a stable connection for the wifi computer to the wireless router, your "dissapearing act" will...dissapear. and on that note, make sure your wireless router is broadcasting the SSID, and that you have the wireless zero service running on the wireless system, as well as dhcp client and dns client. (if indeed windows is configuring your wireless connections.) in a dos window you should be able to ping the other machine and visa versa. bear in mind it takes windows a few minutes to discover the other machines(s) on the network because one pc has to win an election to keep the names and addresses of the others. things change when one is turned off and it starts all over. if you cant ping the opposite machine by name, try by address. if that does not work, your network is broken. either not in same subnet or not in same workgroup. make sure you have client for ms networks loaded and checked in both computers in cp->network->your connectiod, file and printer sharing loaded and checked, and tcpip loaded and checked. both should be getting automatic IP and DNS from the same router. the router should have DHCP running. recheck all that. the laptop should not disappear...unless there is major metal, glass, or high density between it and its router. just an fyi..2.4 ghz is line of sight since almost anything can deflect or reflect it. it just doesnt carry well, because the frequency is to high and does not propigate well, compared to AM which carries hundreds of miles, for example. much lower frequency. James
> 1. you dont understand what you are seeing > such as c$ or administrative share, possibly, and you dont want to delete > those, I originally had 3 Hard Drives in the machine, 1st HDD was C & D, 2nd HDD was E, 3rd was E & F.....all folders were set using Sharing and Security to allow all other machines to access the drives..... I have now removed the physical 3rd drive, so and E & F don't exsist anymore (on the machine the physical HDD was in) and yet, if I browse the network (from any other machine) and go to the missus's machine (i.e. from My Network Places), it still lists them as a Shared Folder, obvsiouly clicking on them, the machine says I can't access them, which is obvsious as I don't have the HDD in there now.... I need to know how to stop it listing the drives that aren't there anymore > just an fyi..2.4 ghz is line of sight > since almost anything can deflect or reflect it. it just doesnt carry > well, > because the frequency is to high and does not propigate well, > compared to AM which carries hundreds of miles, for example. > much lower frequency. I think it could be that issue, Ive got a machine in the furthes part of the house, I have a laptop in the bedroom (directly above the wifi) and it doesn't seem to happen, but the other machine dissapears of the list, it doesn't loose connection as I have mIRC running on that machine and it never looses connection, that is why I was thinking it was an XP issue.... Even when I 'Refresh' on the list of computers available, and it is not there, I can still type in the address bar \\computername and it finds it no problems..... Again, that is why I thought it was Windows just forgetting about it until I get it to look again.... Regards Paul. |

Re: Home Network Issue
Hi Kardon,
since the physical device is gone you can't go to it to remove the share that way but, xp pro: control panel->administrative tools->computer management->shares on the right see the shares you defined, right click->stop sharing. xp home: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040 also try reorienting the wireless router and especially its antenna(s) even horizontally or angularly also see the wireless device settings in device manager and if any posibility of power management putting the wireless to sleep, disallow that. changing channel usually helps, lower channel=lower frequency=better propagation (relatively speaking) and honest, sometimes neighbor hood/ing devices will knock these out.
