cant open jpg's
I have a user that has jpg's emailed to her, but she cannot open them. They
actually come in with what looks like a Quiktime logo. When you try to open the picture it says "couldn't display xxxx.jpg because a suitable graphics importer could not be found". It seems to be trying to open the pictures with Quiktime viewer, even though the jpg file association says to open the files in Microsoft Picture Manager. I have gone into Quiktime and turned off the option to open jpeg's with the Quiktime viewer, but that didnt seem to work. Whats odd is that if this user forwards those pictures to me, and I save to my hard drive, open them, and then send them back to her, they open fine. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? |

Re: cant open jpg's
Sounds like the file association for jpeps is no longer working correctly.
Pick a .jpg file and highlight it. Hold down the Shift key, and right click the file. Select "Open with" and in the box that pops up look for Mspaint or whatever program you viewed jpegs with before. Make sure there is a checkmark in the box that says "Always open this type of file....." and click ok. That will set all your .jpg's to open that way from now on. Re: cant open jpg's
the default for a jpg is windows internet explorer,
but if you have windows fax and pictire viewer that is not bad at all, unless you want them to go to an editor. you can also save the jpg out of the email to a file, then right click and select open with or send to .. to open the pic with something other that what happens when you click on it directly. RE: cant open jpg's
I have looked at and tried all of the suggestions, but nothing has worked. I
need to add some additional information here. I fixed the file associations myself, that was easy, but now, even though the jpg's come into Outlook with the right icon/association, when you click on them they still dont open. They DONT work in Microsoft Picture Manager (get a red 'x'), Picture and Fax viewer (preview unavailable), or Paint (invalid file type). If I go to OPEN WITH, the jpgs open in Photoshop just fine. Another piece of information is that now we have 3 users that have the same problem. They all use Outlook 2003 and are having jpg's sent from Mac users, but when these same Mac users send those jpg's to me, I can open them. If I send them jpg's from my Windows machine, what I send them opens just fine. Also, if these problem users forward me the email with the bad jpg's and I save them out to my hard drive, and then create a new email and attach those same files that they just sent me, they can open them then. Any thoughts? Re: cant open jpg's
I did uninstall Quiktime already, and it didnt help me.
What I did determine is that a security update for Outlook (KB945432) was the culprit. I uninstalled that hotfix and rebooted the computer, set up the correct file associations again, and the jpg's opened. Thanks for everyones help!
