Re: Can/How transfer XP to a new computer?
Thanks for this information. I had the same question as Comrade, but now
understand that I will have to purchase a new copy of XP Home to go with my new computer. Does anyone know how long Microsoft will support XP, or should I upgrade to Vista. -- Ardmore Tiger "Carey Frisch [MVP]" wrote: > The Product Key affixed to a HP computer is only > valid when you reinstall the operating system on > the original HP computer. Re: Can/How transfer XP to a new computer?
Mainstream support lasts until April, 2009 and extended support until April,
2014. Without knowing the specs of your computer and what software you use there is no way to advise as to Vista. Here's my summary: Couple of years ago I purchased a laptop online with XP Pro installed. Did not come with install CD, did not have hidden restore partition or copy of i386 file. It would not pass WGA due to blocked VLK. I purchased a new full install disk containing XP Pro w/SP2. I did a repair install, entered the new 5x5 Product Key, and activated same. As far as I can determine, I am 100% legal. Machine passes all WGA scans for Windows Updates, I was able to install Windows Defender, etc. If I purchase a newer used laptop that has a larger HDD, more memory, faster CPU, etc, CAN I TRANSFER MY XP PRO TO THE NEWER MACHINE? If yes, will I use same Product Key or does MS issue a new Product Key to avoid the "one key, one machine" conflict? Is there any other MS website to go to for more info about transferring the OS to a different machine? (I've already checked the WGA FAQs and didn't see anything about how to transfer - just a reiteration of one license, one machine.) Thanks for any assistance. |

What do you mean by "a new full install disk"? A _retail_ copy of XP is transferrable to a different system if it's uninstalled from the original system first. An OEM copy license ties it to the first machine in which it's installed and can't be moved. So if you bought a retail copy, the answer is yes. If you bought an OEM copy, then no. -- Rock [MS-MVP] |
