Restore point failure

I'm afraid I may have hosed my system. Two days ago I removed
sp3. This morning I went to a month old restore point called "pre sp3
and hit "restore" button. Now, it won't undo this operation. I'm tryin
to get back to where I was this morning. Am I screwed?! TIA

Re: Restore point failure

Need more information. However, can't you re-install SP3?

I removed sp3 because of USB/computer freezing issues. Because
I'm having problems reading a USB external backup drive I tried going
way back to before I installed sp3 in the first place. Didn't help my
drive reading problem, but has created new ones with outdated programs
etc. For instance, My Kaspersky AV program has gone back to an earlier
version, (which I had lately upgraded), but won't run. Can't find my
license key etc. Programs which have been recently deleted are trying
to run, and so on. What would reinstalling sp3 accomplish? I
appreciate your trying to help me.

Re: Restore point failure

It could be a KAV issue - I have had a similar saga. Also, it could be
KAV self protection that is preventing the System Restore, however,
KAV can become very confused if a restore is done to a different
version. KAV 2009 has issues you describe that are being addressed in
update C which will soon be released.

To recover your system you could try the following:

Download the KAV removal tool from
http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208279752

First, run it in Windows normally as per instructions and then try
system restore

If it still fails you could then try force-removal in Safe Mode to
clean up any KAV residue

Run KAVremover9.exe from the command prompt with the following syntax
for BOTH versions of KAV that you had installed

The syntax is kavremover9.exe [kav6 | kav7 | kav2009 | kav2009x64|
kis6 | kis7 | kis2009 | kis2009x64 | kav6fs | kav6wks][/b].

For example if Kaspersky AV 2009 was installed on your PC in this case
the command will be

kavremover9.exe kav2009 /b

Or for KAV version 7
kavremover9.exe kav7 /b

Restart and try system restore, then reinstall KAV

Thank you John. I followed your directions and it worked like a
charm. If nothing else, at least, I have my KAV7 working again. Now if
I can just get the other programs and/or icons to run correctly.... at
least my 'puter is safe. Thanks for that.

Re: Restore point failure

Glad it worked.

Maybe try uninstalling/reinstalling the progs that don't work?
