I've read the link. It's a nice page for understanding the fundamentals
of DEP, but doesn’t give any help to how to fix the DEP and Windows
Explorer related issue.

*Oh, new side affect. In Windows Media Player 9 and 11. (I upgraded
thinking that might solve the problem) I'm experiencing the same problem
as windows explorer. It'll play wmv, mpg, etc. but when I go to play
.avi files it crashes. My Divx and Nero Player works perfectly. Is there
a way to force a codec to take the lead of another in a system? I have
uninstalled all my codec's. (Divx, ac3filter, XviD and
Combined-Community) and reinstalled one at a time. Even with them all
uninstalled still no joy.

I have tried different search crit. on this site and tried some of the
other suggestions.

>Simply do the following steps:
>1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
>2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
>regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
>3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter
>regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
>4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
>regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
>5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
>regsvr32 shmedia.dll

also
>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\she llex\PropertyHandler

Delete the “Default” value then close. You should now be able to see
.avi previews almost instantly but without the crashes

Now, the "regsvr32 shmedia.dll" does keep the DEP from crashing down on
me, but the Application Error still shows up, and Media Player still
crashes.
I have also tried to manual control explorer in
"System>Advance>Performance>DEP" Now my DEP will not turn back on.

Anyone have any other ideas? Even though I formatted my system and
reinstalled my OS just 2 weeks ago. I am truly considering doing it
again.

I've done some searching in the knowledge base and I'm not showing
anything with DEP and that 0x00000000 error code. I've seen references
to Antivirus tripping it up so there's a possibility there. Could you
look in your event viewer for any red or yellow flags please.

As far as codecs go, giev the K-Lite Mega Codec pack a shot. It's
maintained by a guy who always has the latest and greatest codec
updates when they get released. The latest one is version 4.0 and can
be had here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...Codec_Pack.htm

Still looking for references on this. TBD.

One other thing you want to try out is to run Memtest and see if you
have RAM that is operating as it should be. Grab it from here:
http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

Download the ZIP package where it's noted as "Download - Pre-Compiled
Bootable ISO (.zip)", extract the ISO file, and burn it to a CD.
Reboot and choose to boot the CD. You may need to figure out how to
set your computer to boot from the CD. Then run the memory test. It
should take a bit of time for a thorough test.

The only other thing I can think of is to try recently released Hotfix
from this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955109 that
addresses and explorer.exe related issue.

It's not 100% your issue *but*, at the very least, it will update your
explorer.exe from the one in SP3 (which I believe you said you do
have) and you never know, it wouldn't hurt to try.

Visit that link, at the top of the page you'll see "View and request
hotfix downloads", click this link, accept the Agreement, then you'll
be brought to a page where you'll see a check-box for Fix238964. Enter
a valid e-mail address, enter the number in the last field towards the
bottom and click Request Hotfix. Within 1-5 minutes, check your e-mail
and there will be a message from Microsoft with a link to the fix and
a password to extract the file from the link. Apply the patch, reboot
and see what happens. Let me know how it goes.
