Suddenly no free space.

This is a WIN98 question but I suppose it could apply to XP.
My friend has an old WIN98 computer that his wife uses only for her Email.
The active partition is 6GB and has alwaws been about 2GB used.
Suddenly it reports that it has only a few MB free, the drive is almost
full.
I got him to delete and recreate the windows managed swap file, and he only
has the default recycle bin which is empty.
He searched the hard drive for any unknown large files and found none.
Any suggestions please,

Lyn.

Run chkdsk/f from DOS or scandisk.

Google for windirstat, a freeware program that will show you what is using
up your disk space. It works on Win98.

Re: Suddenly no free space.

Thanks for the help Guys, I knew you would point me in the right direction.
I have just found windirstat, if need be I will use
"microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion".
I looked for some win98 groups but the ones I came up with were not very
active.
Win98 seems a long time ago now.
Cheers,
Lyn.

"microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion" is pretty active. :-)
I'm in there too, along with Gary and a few others in here. It's a good
group.
So it hasn't died, yet!! (nor has Win98SE - at least in some respects,
despite what a few here may say! :-)

Yep,
I hung onto 98SE for a long time.
My main interest is FlightSimX and I had to make the switch to XP because
FSX needs it.
In fact XP is preferred by many simmers over VISTA, unless you want to go
64bit.

It's my second computer now. :-)

True, but only for the newest versions like that one (and a couple preceding
it).

I don't want or need either (64 bit or VISTA). Thanks, but no thanks.
:-)

I read some horror stories about the pretty heavy requirements for the
newest version of MS Flight Simulator like the one you're mentioning, I
believe, so I recently bought a somewhat older version so that I won't have
to worry about the frame rate! And I'm using WindowsXP, but even still.
:-).

Up until this point I had been playing a bit (but not often) with FS98,
which admitedly is a bit dated, by now. :-)

Bill,
I have been a FlightSimmer since the days of DOS. The release of the newest
versions of FlightSim have always been accompanied by these "horror
stories".
With the price of today's hardware you can build a rig to do the job without
spending a fortune.

A 64bit OS has one advantage, you can go beyond the 2GIG memory limit of XP.
DX10 promised the world and as yet has delivered nothing.
With all the problems of VISTA 64 bit, I will stay with XP with SP2. This
does a great job.

If you would like to see how far FSX has come, check this out.
It is the soon to be released update for Melbourne International.
It has been developed by ORBX, a company right here in Australia.
