It is called "rogue" because it pretends to be A Good Guy but is really Evil. Do not pay them! Here are removal steps: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malw...antivirus-2009 These may work for you and all may be well. However, in many cases the computer will also be infected with Zlob and/or Vundo trojans and protected by a rootkit. These machines are extremely difficult to clean. If your machine is one of these cases, either get guided help at one of the specialty forums below OR back up your data and do a clean install of Windows. It is your choice. If you are unsure how to back up your data or how to do a clean install, you can take your machine to a local computer professional. I don't recommend using BigComputerStore/GeekSquad types of places. PLEASE DO NOT POST LOGS IN THE MS NEWSGROUPS. http://aumha.net/ - Click on the HijackThis forum. Read the announcement and the stickies *first*. http://www.atribune.org/forums/index.php?showforum=9 http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...splay.php?f=25 http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Malwa..._Here-f37.html http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum...?showforum=170 http://spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5 http://forums.techguy.org/54-security/ http://forums.tomcoyote.org/ Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! Re: Anti Virus 2009
Warning: not an answer to your question (sorry).
I'm starting to see complaints about Antivirus 200* (7, 8, 9) more often now. Mind telling us how you got infected (if you remember at all)? Drive-by download? Antivirus offer from a (malicious) site? I'd like to avoid getting the same problem so I ask. Also, do you browse the web with administrator permission and are your PC patches up to date? Thanks. In all cases except one that have come into my shop in the last few months (and there have been a *lot* of these), the machine also had Vundo and/or Zlob and the malware was protected by a rootkit. Certainly the OP can - and should - try the easy way first. IMO the easy way is to follow the instructions here which are targeted to remove this malware. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malw...antivirus-2009 I do like Spybot and use it but I think it is better to use the tools created to remove this sort of infection first. IMO, of course. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! FAQ - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ |

Spybot also modifies HOSTS file in addition to modifying IE Restricted Zone. From http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...scription.html This tool protects you by adding the URLs of risky sites to your browser's Restricted Zone, preventing malware from installing. The program doesn't scan or work in the background, but for a $10 registration, it will automatically download Restricted Zone lists. The only downside, and it doesn't happen often, is that the tool may lock out a site you visit. Just remove the site from SpywareBlaster's list. --Steve Bass |

IMO, of course. Understandable. I'd been removing the 2008 version quite a bit and 2009 is a bit newer and I've not dealt with it yet. Spybot's been pretty good with 2008 and the other mal clones so that's why I suggested it. Thanks again for the link. - Thee Chicago Wolf |
