Cannot delete two files on mail screen
I have two files, wic_demo.exe and opera_9.10_eng_setup.exe that are the
results of two failed dowloads. When I try to delete them I am told that they are being used by another user or program. Does any body have a suggestion? David d |

Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User |

Your suggstion did not work. I had tried that before but thought I would
give it another try. Any More Ideas? "Malke" wrote: > david d wrote: > > I have two files, wic_demo.exe and opera_9.10_eng_setup.exe that are the > > results of two failed dowloads. This is why it would have been good to include that information in your first post. I wouldn't have wasted your time (and mine) then. You don't have to do this in Safe Mode, but I would just to be sure: 1. If you can move the files to C:\, do that. 2. If you can rename the files' extensions to .old, do that. 3. Start Task Manager and on the Processes tab, kill explorer.exe. 4. In Task Manager (which will still be up), click on the Applications tab>New Task>cmd 5. This will run the command prompt. Navigate to where the two files are and try deleting them (del). 6. If you are successful, then New Task>explorer.exe will bring back the GUI. An alternative would be to boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt Only to do the above work. I assume you already know how to navigate from the command line. If you don't, post back. Addendum to my last answer - I looked at your subject line again and see that you have referenced a "mail screen". What does that mean? I've been assuming that you downloaded two files in the usual way and they are wherever you downloaded them to, such as the Desktop or a Downloads folder. What is a "mail screen" and if this has something to do with your email program, which program is it? Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" Re: Cannot delete two files on mail screen
David,
Open 'My Computer', right click the dive where these files are, select 'Properties', then 'Tools' tab. Press 'Check Now...' button, and select 'Automatically fix file system error' checkbox, and press 'Start' button here. Restart if Windows will ask about that ('The drive has opened files <etc>'). If that won't help -- restart in Safe Mode, right click one of these files, select 'Properties' -- 'Security' tab, and see if your name is present here and that you have all the permissions. If not -- add yourself, mark 'Full control' for you, press 'Ok' and try to delete this file after that. Then make the same with the other one. -- Mikhail Zhilin MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User, 2000..2008) http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail.
