xp pro - administrator adding ?
A friend received a used laptop with xp pro with an admin account and a
guest account on it. Both accounts are password protected, and she has only the password for the guest account. She is limited with what she can do with it. Is there a way to create a new admin account, or to add admin rights to the guest account ? I don't want to have to reinstall the os for her. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

To repeat: If the person from whom she purchased the computer cannot give her the passwords, (and the installation CDs for the OS and any other software installed), she'd be wise to immediately check with the appropriate law enforcement agencies to ensure that she hasn't inadvertently purchased stolen property. Anyway, it's a moot point. With second-hand computers, perhaps even if acquired from a family member or friend, but especially if acquired from a stranger, the wisest course of action would definitely be to format the hard drives and start fresh. She doesn't want to get in trouble because the original owner may have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555375 They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot |
