Using direct cable connection to transfer files and settings

I'm trying to use the files and settings transfer wizard with a direct cable
connection to transfer from my desktop to a new laptop both using Windows XP
home edition. When I'm on the 'old computer' both the option to transfer
using a 'direct cable' or 'other removable media' are not available to click
on. (I can see them but can't click on). This is making me crazy. Help
please?

Nice article but it did not address my question.

If you are using ethernet, you need the special cable to connect two
computers together.
I can't remember the name for this type, but it needs to resemble a null
modem cable (but
for ethernet).

It's called a cross over cable.

There are many different direct cables to use. Be more precise with your
question.

Re: Using direct cable connection to transfer files and settings

Just a FYI
here is one I bought ($80) ouch!
http://cjoint.com/data/bAarzZSLpa.htm

It does <not> work with Win98se, even with USB 2.0

And the "Free" lap link Sync is a lie, it is a 30 day trial only.

Re: Using direct cable connection to transfer files and settings

It plainly states from XP to VISTA. Nothing about W98.
