XP Operating System Disk

My wife has a 3 year old Toshiba Laptop that has XP on it. It's way past
due for a reinstall. The problem is that I lost the reinstall disk and can
not get one from Toshiba. I have a Windows XP Home Edition disk that I
bought for my desktop computer. I do not use this computer anymore because
the motherboard had a problem. What procedure do I need to follow with
Microsoft in order to get them to let me use my paid for XP disk on her
laptop since the desktop it was on is now gone, long gone? I would
appreciate any help. Thanks so much.

If you aren't running XP Home on the old desktop and it was a retail
version, there's nothing you need to do. Install it on the Toshiba and
use the Product Key that came with the retail XP Home disk. You may even
be able to activate Windows over the Internet; if not, it's an easy
phone call. Make sure you get all the drivers for the Toshiba and any
specialized laptop software from their site and have them on hand ahead
of time.

Agree with Malke. If you have important files on the Toshiba make sure to
back it all up.

God Bless... :-)

Re: XP Operating System Disk

You have to download all of the drivers and utilities from Toshiba for the
model you have. Put them on a cd. You will need to install them after you
install XP Home. After you install XP Home simply activate. Don't make it
the first thing you do, however. Give yourself a few days to make sure you
aren't going to have to redo things.

Why do you feel the need to reinstall the XP that is already on the laptop?
With basic care you should not have to do that. It is not "routine
maintenance."

Why "past due?" An operating system, after all, isn't like the oil in
an engine, needing to be "changed" periodically.

If it's a retail license for WinXP Home, you need do nothing. If it
was an OEM license, however, it was permanently bound to the first
computer and died when that computer died; it cannot legitimately be
re-used.

been three years and my wife has installed and uninstalled many things. My
daughter uses it and has done the same thing. Let's just say that Im better
at maintaining my computers they they are I know it's not basic but ive
done it before, just not to her laptop. It has to improve the performance a
little. Thanks again everyonel.
