Odd as it may seem, installing the latest version of Acrobat Reader solved the problem!
I have Acrobat Pro, so I haven't had Reader on my computer for a long time. I just d'loaded the latest version of Reader, and no more hangs! Thanks to James Bonham and his advice! There must be some shut-down script that depends on Reader being present. BTW, my computer is using XP, not Vista.
