In fact, InDesign *does* overlapping character styles. In the Nested Styles pane of the paragraph-style dialog you can list several character styles. These don't cancel each other out, but supplement each other if the criteria you specify cause the styles to apply to the same stretch of text. So the technology is there. WordPerfect has supported overlapping character styles without any problems since, what, early 1980s or thereabouts.

I've put in several requests for such a feature: hope that more people will do so, too!
