Replacing with OTF
Moving to IDCS3 We'd like to attempt to start using only Open type fonts.
For the body copy in our publications we've used ITC Garamond. It would be nice to go with Garamond Pro but we just don't care for the look of it (x height is smaller) Any thoughts on an OT replacement font? Thanks. |

ITC Garamond Std.
http://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/stor...kage&code=1059 But why? I can see buying new OT fonts, but if you already have a perfectly good font, why spend $195 for the OT version? The only good reason I can think of is if you're working cross-platform. -- Kenneth Benson Pegasus Type, Inc. www.pegtype.com |

Re: Replacing with OTF
"but why?"
Well, if you're using features like ligatures and fractions and whatnot, even small caps and non-lining figures, it's a lot more convenient to use Opentype where all these substitutions take place automatically than to use an old font and keep having to switch to the Expert Set and the Small Caps style etc. etc. |

It would be nice to go with Garamond Pro but we just don't care for the look of it (x height is smaller). SLLD, Ken's already pointed you to the OT version of ITC Garamond, so I'll just note that ITC Garamond doesn't resemble any of the many other fonts bearing the name "Garamond". (In fact, many consider it a travesty for it to be called Garamond in the first place.) Well, if you're using features like ligatures and fractions and whatnot, even small caps and non-lining figures, it's a lot more convenient to use Opentype. In general, yes, but in this one specific case I don't believe that the OT version of ITC Garamond has such nice features. You're getting perhaps a few extra glyphs (eg, the euro) and easier acess to a couple of ligatures for your $195. For future fonts, SLLD may get better returns. |
