CS3 Extended Background and foreground colorsstay at black/white/grey

Hey,

I got a HUGE problem and I need this as quick as I can get it. I have something big due.

Anyway... When I open a new file and set up some stuff and what-not, I go to set up my background and foreground colors and whenever I pick a darker color like 'Maroon' It goes to black. A middle color like baby blue goes to gray and a light color like lime green goes to white. And I'm totally stuck in the mud.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks.

Do you have a Grayscale document open by any chance? Open a color one.

See, I'm kinda new to photoshop and everything.. But I've opened it and closed it and re-opened it and everything. If that doesn't answer your question then, may I ask what a grayscale is and where I can find it?
