What are the true benefits of using an external css file versus keeping it in the head?

1) Making a single edit affects display throughout entire site. A
fabulously efficient way to work.

2) Stylesheet remains in memory, reducing bandwidth and load times.

Actually, it remains in the local cache, allowing the fetch to be done
locally, rather than from the server.

And you forgot -

3) it reduces the weight of the pages.

for me, I split it up.

the css that remains constant across all the pages, i use an external css file.
the css that's unique to that page, i keep it in the head
