Files being overwritten
I just upgraded to Dreamweaver CS3 from MX 2004. I have the following enabled
for my site definition: Maintain synchronization information; Enable file check in and check out; and Check out files when opening. The problem is, every time I open a file locally, it automatically and instantaneously gets overwritten by the remote file. This did not happen with MX 2004, and this has caused many problems for me. Is this supposed to be happening, or do I have a problem here? I've tried disabling Maintain synchronization information, but this doesn't change anything. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. |

Is the file you are opening one you have previously checked out? If so, then it should not be overwritten. If not, then it would have to be overwritten. Are you collaborating with others on this project? Is that why you have checkin/checkout enabled? -- Murray --- ICQ 71997575 Adobe Community Expert (If you *MUST* email me, don't LAUGH when you do so!) ================== http://www.projectseven.com/go - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources http://www.dwfaq.com - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources ================== "akirell" <webforumsuser@macromedia.com> wrote in message news:fqrl9k$lku$1@forums.macromedia.com... >I just upgraded to Dreamweaver CS3 from MX 2004. Re: Files being overwritten
Sometimes the files are ones I have checked out before; however, I always check
files back in after pushing them to the remote location. There is one other person who works on the site and that's why I have check in/check out enabled. Shouldn't I be prompted before my local file is automatically overwritten? |

Re: Files being overwritten
If you have not previously checked out the file, and then you double click
on it, the local file will ALWAYS be overwritten by the remote file. That's how checkin/checkout works, and it's how it's always worked. And when you check it back in, it will be pushed to the remote server automatically, so there is no need to first PUT the file and then check it back in. What is the problem with the local file being overwritten? If it's properly checked in, then you would not be able to make any local changes anyhow. -- Murray --- ICQ 71997575 Adobe Community Expert (If you *MUST* email me, don't LAUGH when you do so!) ================== http://www.projectseven.com/go - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources http://www.dwfaq.com - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources ================== "akirell" <webforumsuser@macromedia.com> wrote in message news:fqrp4c$pk9$1@forums.macromedia.com... > Sometimes the files are ones I have checked out before; however, I always > check > files back in after pushing them to the remote location. Re: Files being overwritten
If the automatic overwriting of files upon opening has always been, I never
noticed it. I have always had file check in/check out enabled, yet never experienced my files being overwritten until CS3. The specific problem with the file being automatically overwritten is simply the fact that I feel I should be asked first if I want to overwrite the file. Isn't that the point of the synchronization feature - to alert you when your files are not synched and then let you choose what you want to do? Also, you said if a file is properly checked in, then I will not be able to make any local changes. That doesn't make sense to me. If a co-worker checks out a file, makes a change to it and checks it back in. I can then check out that file and make changes of my own and check it back in, right? Am I misunderstanding you on that? |

If you are using checkin/checkout, the remote site is the gold standard for all checked-in files. Thus, overwriting your local copy is of no consequence, since you cannot have made changes to the file after it has been checked in. It would be unnecessary for DW to ask if you want to overwrite it, because DW assumes that you know it will be overwritten by virtue of the fact that you have just initiated a checkout operation. Get it? > If a co-worker checks > out a file, makes a change to it and checks it back in. I can then check > out > that file and make changes of my own and check it back in, right? Am I > misunderstanding you on that? Your understanding as expressed in the first two sentences is absolutely correct. If your co-worker checks out a file, you cannot check it out until it's properly checked in by your co-worker. Once the file is checked in, you can then check it out. -- Murray --- ICQ 71997575 Adobe Community Expert (If you *MUST* email me, don't LAUGH when you do so!) ================== http://www.projectseven.com/go - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources http://www.dwfaq.com - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources ================== "akirell" <webforumsuser@macromedia.com> wrote in message news:fqruk3$293$1@forums.macromedia.com... > If the automatic overwriting of files upon opening has always been, I > never > noticed it.
