Cant Access: Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior Why?

Hi All

I have just created a simple layer site web page in Dreamweaver and I am now
trying to add the Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior to a pop up menu image but when I
click on the plus sign in Behaviors and hover over Deprecated the Show Pop-Up
Menu and also control Shockwave or Flash and Hide Pop-Up Menu are all greyed
out stopping me from accessing them which is strange as I have selected the
image, also in the Behaviors list I have selected HTML 4.01 in the Show Events
For and I am in Standard Layout. I hope you can help me soon.

Kind Regards,

Oliver

Re: Cant Access: Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior Why?

Those pop-up menus are SOOO awful, that thankfully, CS3 prevents you from
adding them to a new page.

Read this to see why they are so bad -
http://www.losingfight.com/blog/2006...menufw_menujs/

There are MUCH better ways -

Check the uberlink and MacFly tutorials at PVII -
http://www.projectseven.com/

and the Navbar tutorial/articles at Thierry's place
http://tjkdesign.com/articles/dropdown/

Or this one (more recent article):

Or to get it done fast, go here -

Re: Cant Access: Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior Why?

Thanks for your reply Murray very much appreciated, dont worry Murray (lol) I
am doing a Dreamweaver MX 2004 Course at Exeter College and in the handout it
tells you how to create a pop-up menu using the Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior, I
did not realise that pop-up menus are SOOO awful, I will go onto the link and
read up about it thanks and the other links to. I have finished creating a
layer based web page so how can it be a new page I do not understand?

Re: Cant Access: Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior Why?

By "new page" I meant a newly created page, i.e., one that does not already
contain a legacy pop-up menu.

And by the way "...layer based web page..." gives me the willies, and it
should do the same for you. Using absolutely positioned containers as a
layout method is a very poor choice. If that's what they are teaching you,
they are badly off base.

Here's some more reading for you -

Re: Cant Access: Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior Why?

I thought you meant that but I was not sure and my page does contain a legacy
pop-up menu but I suppose Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Dreamweaver CS3 is quite
different in the way it behaves.

My lecturer said that quite a few businesses still use either table or layer
based websites so he thought it would be a good idea to add it to his handout
which is 411 pages long, no joke! but he did say he does not expect us to
complete it within the 10 week course every Saturday for 4 hours. Why is
creating layer based websites a very poor choice and gives you the willies? if
it explains this in the links you have given me then you do not need to answer
this. Thanks for the extra links! looks like I will be reading more instead of
studying the handout lol!

Yes - read the links.

> my page does contain a legacy pop-up menu

Is it a template controlled page? One of the reasons why the pop-up menus
are so awful is that they are incompatible with template-based child pages.
Once you place them, you cannot edit them. <sigh>

Re: Cant Access: Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior Why?

My layers web page used to be a template controlled page until I detached it
from the template before I started to try to create a pop up menu using the
Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior. Dreamweaver CS3 does not seem to want to play fairly
or nicely:-(

Re: Cant Access: Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior Why?

lol Murray *ACE* when I went to College last Saturday (15/03/08) I plugged in
my Flash Drive into there computer loaded my stuff on there Dreamweaver MX 2004
software and when I went into the Behavior the Show Pop-Up Menu Behavior was
not greyed out and I could use it and I did the same as I did at home so I
guess that Dreamweaver CS3 Behaves differently to Dreamweaver MX 2004

To be honest here in the UK (South West) it is like being in the dark ages
when it comes to web design as Exeter College seems to have all the old Adobe
Software and of course the Courses come with dark age hand outs they could do
so much better and they are a popular college to. At least there are up to date
web design tutorials on the internet and up to date web design books out there
to!;-)

If you read the link I posted, then I think you have made a foolish mistake.
But - well, good luck!
