OT: Vista & mySQL/Apache

Good day.

Vista Ultimate, CS3 & mySQL/PHP.

I have just put Vista on my PC and had difficulty installing mySQL on
Vista. (It doesn't complete and leaves me frustrated.)

I use mySQL & PHP to develop & work on our Family's mySQL database.

Now, can I skip mySQL and install Apache server on my machine. Will it do
the same as mySQL and will I be able to run PHPmyAdmin?

Thank you for your help so long.

Deon

Re: OT: Vista & mySQL/Apache

Ok, I was writing a lot of stuff not making sence. (It's either IIS or
Apache?!)

How can I get mySQL to successfully install on Vista?

Why don't you try one of the "all-in-one" suits out there. I'm running
easyPHP which comes with MySQL, PHP, Apache and PHPmyAdmin and it works
great. There are some help pages out there which can help you do a safe
install.

No... it's apache, mysql and phpmyadmin. Not the best tools available
for doing asp!

If you still need it google easyphp

Re: OT: Vista & mySQL/Apache

Excellent Kim, I have downloaded it - now it's only for the
installation. Is it easy to setup? I'm very cautious on installing &
uninstalling lately and only want something that can help me as a hobby
developer.

Thank you for putting me on the track of easyPHP!

Thanx again!
Deon

Re: OT: Vista & mySQL/Apache

Hi Deon,

Yes it very easy to install. There is a bunch of site out there going
over installation. I recommend to follow one of these guides. (do a
search for easyPHP+install+guide or something like that)

Re: OT: Vista & mySQL/Apache

Kim, thanx again for your help.
I have installed easyPHP but there's a problem with a port. I get an error
stating the following:

Apache cannot be runned: another Web server use the Web port or port is
blocked by firewall.

I have disabled my firewall and have even apache's config file so that it
listens to port 8080 and not for incase IIS has not fully uninstalled.

I tried to look for a support forum on easyphp but couldn't find any.
Do you have some help, please?

Regards,
Deon

Re: OT: Vista & mySQL/Apache

Kim, I have installed easyPHP. But, Apache does not want to run. I get
this message:
Apache cannot be runned: another web server use the Web port or port is
blocked by firewall.

After this I have disabled the firewall and uninstalled IIS. Still no
luck.

Because I was so eager to get this up and running, I formatted my HDD
and did a fresh install. After som 47 updates and an anti-virus
programme, I installed easyPHP. Still no luck with Apache as I get the
same message.
What do I need to do more?

Deon (desperate!)

Deon,
Something is using port 80, to test, just type in http://localhost/ and
see what comes up, it may give you a clue as to what is using the port.
If IIS is uninstalled, something else is using it, finding it may be
hard, especially if its a clean install of Windows. I don't know
anything that would use port 80 apart from IIS that is installed in a
default Windows install.
