Site Search issues with Spry Widgets
Currently evaluating search tools to work with Spry accordion, tabbed panels
and so on. Apparently NONE of them do. This is a big problem. Our site uses mostly Dreamweaver spry widgets. I have tested the very highly rated zoom Search from WrenSoft and also expect problems with Google Search and Atomz (based on web research I have done). If one searches for a word residing in one of the spry tabbed panels, accordians (there could be many layers on a single page of course), site search engines correctly take you to the page but naturally does not open the correct tabbed panel (Zoom Search doesn't understand DW code of course). Just presents you with the default panel. User would have to dig through all panels on that page to find the text. Our users need these nice interfaces. This is reality. Also some of the Java script in Wrensoft that highlights search words conflicts with existing Java script within Dreamweaver. I've worked around some of it but the core issue is the landing on the page and opening the correct tab. The question is can anyone suggest a search engine tool that will work with Dreamweaver Spry widgets or suggest something else. This is a huge disincentive to use Spry. Perhaps build pages without Spry to specifically go to after search? Sound like a lot of work. Thanks Richard |

Re: Site Search issues with Spry Widgets
Ok with the Spry situation, currently the product is technically a beta so
below you are going to find a couple of links. http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/home.html - This is the official Spry homepage. There is an updater here. Inside the package that you download you will find samples and an Extension for DW. Run the extension and then under the Sites menu in DW you will see an option to update Spry. Then keep an eye on this site every few months for updates. http://www.adobe.com/go/labs_spry_pr1_forum - This is the link to the official Spry forums. I think I remember reading that currently Spry cannot be indexed but that this is planned for one of the upcoming releases. Adobe developers do check that forum so I would recommend posting over there for further developments. |

Re: Site Search issues with Spry Widgets
What you want to do is fairly close to impossible... and it's neither a Spry
deficiency (it has enough of its own) nor a deficiency in any other type of widget that presents data in an interface of hidden/shown panels. As to your other issue (script conflicts), we are big fans of Wrensoft (we use Zoomsearch) and the problem is with Wrensoft's script, not anyone else's. > Currently evaluating search tools to work with Spry accordion, tabbed > panels > and so on. Re: Site Search issues with Spry Widgets
Actually Al just looking at the code for their menubar I notice the following:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/s...rHorizontal.cs s /* SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css - version 0.6 - Spry Pre-Release 1.6.1 */ Also if it wasn't a beta I would really expect the Spry to update via the Adobe Updater but it doesn't which I think is a major disadvantage to it right now. |

I know. The problem is that in response to my criticizing Spry widgets once (and in private with Adobe employees) I stated that I could not write a formal review or analysis because Spry has been in beta for over 2 years ;-). The Adobe employee's response was: >>> If you'd like to review it, please do (you noted you could not due to >>> it's >>> state of completion). 1.6 is a complete release from our perspective - >>> and... Frankly, I don't know what to think or whom to believe at Adobe anymore. -- Al Sparber - PVII http://www.projectseven.com Fully Automated Menu Systems | Galleries | Widgets http://www.projectseven.com/go/Elevators |
