Website critique - if you could change something....

~Hi all

I am personally really happy with how my website currently is -
http://www.thewakeplace.com - its is a very popular site and things seem to be
going well.

However, it is my first website and i am wondering if anyone has any
recommendations? changes to the code, CSS....anything that people think will
make the site perform better? Its my first ever website built from scratch...!

Thanks

Jon

Change this -

<link rel="icon" href="favicon.png" type="image/png">

to this -

<link rel="icon" href="favicon.png" type="image/png" />

and you'll be done! Looks fine.

It's too wide for me - I get a horizontal scrollbar. Why do you think
all people use browser windows wider than 1000px? It's almost trivial to
keep such a layout more flexible in a range from 800-1200px for example,
which would allow you to easily reach much more people.

You should also add some background colors here and there to your CSS.
With images disabled the page will be unusable because of white text on
white background (or whatever the browser will default to).

I would make the background image your using for the black table a little
different.

If you save the table edges with a transparent background and save them as a
png, you won't get any background over lay's like you have at the moment.

Part from that looks good mate :)

Thanks for all the responses - very much appreciated!

With it being my first site that i made from scratch, i'm still learning how
everything works....

If anyone has anything further to add, please do!

very minor but, 'Wreck of the Week #4

should be 'Wreck of the Week #4' or 'Wreck of the Week' #4

Re: Website critique - if you could change something....

Personally I would ignore Fesser, as the width is fine. However you might
consider adding some color into the body of the site? It's very B&W after the
masthead, if you worked in some subtle red or blue elements (from the logo) it
could make the body copy pop more.

Also the bright white (#FFF) could be turned down a touch, try a soft gray
(#9E9E9E perhaps?).

The text you use "look" pointing at the expo button - this is fun, why not
repeat that treatment somewhere as it's only used once?

The only technical setback that springs to attention would be your image based
navigation. If that was rendered as text you'd score more points with the
search engines. It's a trade-off you at least should consider, as I don't think
you're really doing anything terribly unique that Arial Bold would wreck.

The margin on the left hand side (where the text meets the edge of the black)
is more narrow than the right hand side margin (where the photos meet the edge
of the black).

Overall it's pretty damn good for a first design, keep up the good work!

I don't like it being called by my last name.

Only for you. For many others it's not. And I've suggested a solution
how to easily solve this issue in order to improve the site's usability
without affecting the entire layout too much.

Re: Website critique - if you could change something....

Even taking a conservative guess Micha, I seriously doubt his resolution is
going to be an issue for even one out of ten visitors. And I would not call
tearing his code apart and rebuilding it "easy". Especially for someone who
admitted it was his first design. Give me a break!

Even Adobe.com is 995px wide (fixed width). When are you going to see the
writing on the wall?
