links and templates
As I am new to this I am struggling with templates and links. If I create
buttons in the template and link them to pages, which I have subsequently created from the template itself, the buttons on these pages are not editable and can not themselves be linked to other pages. What I suppose I am asking is what is the process for linking pages from a template. HAs nayone any ideas or links to the relavant information. |

Re: links and templates
I'm not sure I understand your question. Can you give me a specific
example? It sounds like you are wanting to edit a button in a navigation element to link to different pages, depending on which page you are on? That would be very confusing, I'd think. -- Murray --- ICQ 71997575 Adobe Community Expert (If you *MUST* email me, don't LAUGH when you do so!) ================== http://www.projectseven.com/go - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources http://www.dwfaq.com - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources ================== "ezomb" <webforumsuser@macromedia.com> wrote in message news:gbqfr3$2di$1@forums.macromedia.com... > As I am new to this I am struggling with templates and links. Re: links and templates
Thanks fpr reply. I'll see if I can be a little clearer. I create a template:
four navigation buttons on the left hand side, a banner at the top and footer at the bottom of the page, all uneditable. I then have 4 editable regions in centre of the page for text and images. I save this as a template. I then open four pages, name them and they correspond to the template. How can I create links from say, ANALYSIS PAGE to HOME PAGE, as the navigation buttons I have set up in the template, and then in the ANALYSIS PAGE, as well as the other three pages are all uneditable? |

Re: links and templates
lets try this-
first- make sure you create the child pages of the template like this: dw menu->file->New In the New File dialog box, click the Templates tab at top. Pick this site from list on left, pick this template from list on right make sure checkbox for "update this file" is checked, and click okay Now save this file in this site folder. repeat for the other child pages. Now open the template .dwt file. Make the buttons link to the pages you want them to link to. Save the template. click okay to updating the pages. now the pages have correct links in the locked area where the buttons are. -- Alan Adobe Community Expert, dreamweaver http://www.adobe.com/communities/experts/ |

Re: links and templates
That process is different in CS3, Alan. It's FILE | Page from Template....

Re: links and templates
Thanks for the answer it worked. \i would like to ask another thing. When I put
in flash buttons everything is ok. When I go to the web with F12 the active x blocker comes into play( I have a school lap top with restrictions). Even though I say allow the button disappears. I can do ordinaary text links but the buttons have a much more professional look. Is there any way around this or do I just have to accept the restrictions. |

Re: links and templates
> buttons have a much more professional look.
No, they have a rank amateur look. If you want to use Flash for navigation, consider this - 1. Some people don't have Flash installed - what do they do? 2. Search engines may not parse Flash links - your site will not be spidered 3. Screen assistive devices don't parse Flash links - what will those users do? 4. DW cannot maintain links within a Flash movie, so if you move or rename a linked file, your navigation will break - what will you do? You will have to remake those buttons. It's usually a very bad idea for these reasons - and for these reasons, Adobe has removed Flash buttons and Flash text from the next version of Dreamweaver. > When I go to the web with F12 the active x blocker comes into play Not when you go to the web. F12 is a local preview.... http://www.projectseven.com/support/answers.asp?id=153 -- Murray --- ICQ 71997575 Adobe Community Expert (If you *MUST* email me, don't LAUGH when you do so!) ================== http://www.projectseven.com/go - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources http://www.dwfaq.com - DW FAQs, Tutorials & Resources ================== "ezomb" <webforumsuser@macromedia.com> wrote in message news:gbrb39$85j$1@forums.macromedia.com... > Thanks for the answer it worked. \i would like to ask another thing.
