site proofing with client

I need to allow a client to preview their website. I don't have my own site.
Can I save the site to a flash drive for them to preview in their browser? Are
there any special precautions I need to take? Is this even possible? Any better
ideas?

It depends on what you have used on your site -

is it just a simple static site with no SSI includes - i.e it doesn't
need a test server.

If so - copying complete site to a CDROM/ USB drive etc will still be
readable.

If the site uses dynamic code such as php, asp or SSI's then you need
a test server.

But on the other hand - webspace is so cheap - why not set up a test
host account. Then you can modify the site from your office / home /
airport etc. and let client see it without having to physically meet.

I have to ask... if you have clients, why don't you have your own website?
If you're really busy with clients, your own website doesn't need to be
much - but it needs to be there! Then you can use it to present client sites
etc.

You *could* save the site to a flash drive, but if it has any scripting in
it then that won't work.

Pete.

You could always web conference with them. Check out something like Brio from Adobe.

You might need to add the 'Mark of the Web' to the top of the code
(after the DOCTYPE) to avoid getting security warnings. See here for
more info:

site can always be viewed offline unless you have dynamic data to show.

Re: site proofing with client

OK, you've shamed me into it! I've set up a site and created just a basic home
page with a link to preview client sites. What do I need to put in the 'link'
to find the site. The client site is not live yet so I can't link to a firm
web address. I hope their entire site folder does not need to be located
inside my business site folder in order to make it accessible from the web at
the client's office. Can someone walk me through this?

If you create a folder on your site to place your clients files into, for
instance, if your website is www.bob.com - then you would upload a folder to
the root of your site - which would look something like this in the browser
address bar www.bob.com/clientfolderwillbehere/

this will keep your clients files in a nice compartment on your site.
In you site management in DW, you would set up the ftp with your sites
username and password and set the folder (for ftp) to /clientfolder/ (or
whatever you call it)

When your client wants to see his site, the link would look something like
this, depending what youve named the files and folders -
www.bob.com/clientfolder/index.html

Just thought that I would add a bit of clarity there - in you dw site files
panel, right click on 'site - folder (your root folder) and choose 'new -
folder'. Name it whatever your client folder will be called, then place all
your client files in there.
When the client surfs there, they will probably need to enter the index.html
file after folder - eg. www.bob.com/clientfolder/index.html to make sure
they get to the right page, and not just a list of you files.

Hope this is clear
Fiona
