Wheel click to open tab

Not sure if I should say Wheel or Middle, but I used to be able to click
the wheel on my mouse & open a new tab from a link on the page & now I
can't. I switched from a USB mouse to a PS2 mouse cause I was having
problems with the USB ports, now I can't middle click & open a tab.
I've looked for a setting in Windows Control Panel/ Mouse & in Firefox
options>Tabs & can't find anything there to set it. I've had FF for
years & never had a problem, I'm using FF 2.0.0.03 Gecko/20080311 on a
WinXP system. I'm pretty sure it' snot the mouse since I've had the
problem with 3 different PS2 mice.

Re: Wheel click to open tab

A couple questions and maybe some suggestions:

(a) Did you remove the USB mouse via the Device Manager?

(b) If so, did Windows pop a new hardware found message when you added
the PS-2 mouse?

(c) Do the PS-2 mice have any special drivers that need to be installed?

(d) Does the scroll wheel work (in FF and other applications)?

Check your configuration (browse to about:config) and enter middlemouse
in the filter.

On my system there are 4 options. I think only one can be true and the
rest must be false. On my system middlemouse.openNewWindow is the one
that is true.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll answer you in order:
a) No, I didn't see it in device manager as an entry on any of the USB ports

b) No new hardware window when PS2 mouse was plugged in

c) No driver came with the new mouse

d) The scroll wheel works fine in all programs except to open new tabs

Both browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick & middlemouse.openNewWindow
show as true in about:config, should one of them be changed to false??
I have 5 options & all the rest are set to false.

What extensions do you have installed? Try setting
browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick to false.

That is about the last thing that I would want to do with the
middle-click, which I feel is much more valuable set to "Enter"
across all applications, including Firefox.

But you can check out
middlemouse.* which has been removed from
http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config_entries
which is where one would expect to find such things
but in a not so enlightened mode you have to go hunting starting at
http://kb.mozillazine.org/index.php?...otify.interval

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Middlemouse.openNewWindow

Which I think you would want to set to False, since it
applies to what is in the clipboard.

HTH,
David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site

Extensions:

Down them all
Flash Got
Launchy
Link Alert
Phish Tank Site Checker
Remove Cookies
Stumble Upon
Tiny URL Creator
Uplug
Update Notifier
User Agent Switch

Didn't realize I had that many.

I tried changing the setting in about:config but it didn't work. The
only thing the middle wheel will do is scroll the page. I can open
links in a new tab using the right click menu, but to me that's a pain.
It's always worked before, no matter what mouse or what version of FF &
the only thing I changed is going from a USB mouse to a PS2 mouse, strange.

Ok, I figured it out. Dumb problem I missed. We used to have a
Logitech mouse & the Logitech Mouseware was still on the computer,
apparently Windows was defaulting to this software instead of it's
native drivers. I uninstalled the software, re-set all the about:config
files I'd changed & the mouse now works the way I want it to. Thanks
for the help.

Glad it now works for you. But that doesn't really seem like
a very good situation. You should be able to change from one
mouse to another. Though you used to have to change BACK
and FORWARD settings to work with a Logitech mouse.
