Many NPR pages, like for example

load the title on the tab but do not display in FF. You can get the
source code and if you cut and paste it in, say, NVU, the page is there,
it has been downloaded, while FF still keeps Waiting for www.npr.org...
If you open the page in an IE tab, it opens immediately.

Works here and loads just fine in FF 3.01. Right off, I can't see what
your problem may be but you may want to install the latest Flash player
if that's the problem, dunno right now.

Looks fine here. FF 3.0.1, Win XP Pro.

Try deleting your cache.

Same here with FF 3.1a1, and RR cable, so it must be something else in
your computer.
Check your Host file.

Try using ctrl+shift+delete to clear your cache, then revisit the page.

Opened OK in Firefox 3, Firefox 2 displayed the page a bit slower but then seems
to permanently hang "Transfering data from media.npr.org". Hitting the "Stop"
button crashes Firefox 2. Seems to confirm that the page is messed up.

You didn't say what version of Firefox you are using, but my experience seems to
suggest that Firefox 3 is more tolerant of bad code. YMMV
