cannot open msft site

In IE, this site opens with no difficulty:

http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr....aspx?ln=en-us

And this site reads "Welcome" and offers methods to update. While in
FX3.01 it opens reading the following(and I've ensured that the
addresses are included in trusted sites). Perhaps there's another
option needed in FX or is this simply Msft's method to force people to
use IE?
Quote:
See which updates failed to install. To continue, you must first add
this website to your trusted sites in Internet Explorer.

The site cannot determine which updates apply to your computer or
display those updates unless you change your security settings to allow
ActiveX controls and active scripting. The best way to do this without
lowering your security settings is to make this site a trusted website.
Your security settings will continue to block potentially harmful
ActiveX controls and scripting from other sites but you will be able to
get updates.
To make this site a trusted website:
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet options.
2. On the Security tab, click the Trusted Sites icon.
3. Click Sites and under Add this website to the zone, copy and paste
these website addresses. You can only add one address at a time and you
must click Add after each one. Note that you may need to uncheck
"Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone."
* http://update.microsoft.com
* https://update.microsoft.com
* http://*.update.microsoft.com
* https://*.update.microsoft.com
* http://download.windowsupdate.com
Note: The asterisks and different addresses allow your computer to work
with the site, no matter how you try to access it from your computer or
the Web.

Part of Microsoft's method of forcing people to use IE.
I keep IE on my windows machines (its there and loading anyway) just for
updates

Of course, Apple builds in it's own 'Software Update' program that does
the same thing, on my macs I use that of course.

Frankly, I would avoid the site. Basically, it is asking you to give
unrestricted access to your computer to those sites. I have never
needed to do that to use any MS site.

This is the first time I've visited msft for updates in several months
and I believe the 1st time I've had to use IE. Could be mistaken, but
that's as I recall. If so perhaps it's a recent policy revision.

You can "visit" the Microsoft Update site with Firefox but to install updates
you need the full power of Microsoft's ActiveX. I don't believe a full featured
ActiveX plug-in is available for Firefox. The Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox ActiveX
plug-in only allows for video files.

Maybe you have been using Windows Automatic Updates so all of the ActiveX
activity was going on in the background without your knowledge. Updating
through the browser requires Internet Explorer and ,in my recollection, always has.

In a discussion in this thread JM offers his method for circumventing
Microsoft's ActiveX requirement.
