need replace option in firefox
When there are so many pages having data fields, beginning from username
password to full fledged mail composing, forum posts, all kinds of messages, scraps, then we surely need powerful edit - Replace/ Replace All, Replace Again options in firefox. In this respect, ff is still in the initial days of non-interactive web. -- V |

Re: need replace option in firefox
You mean the ability to edit the contents of a web page? There's a
proxy that I played with for a while that does that, you can put in search/replace strings to edit things out before the browser sees them. I think I also saw a plug-in for Firefox 1 that did that but that was years ago. Phil Hibbs. |

I am asking firefox to allow me to edit what I type - in various data-entry boxes/ text areas/ forms/ BB forum posts/ mail compose at site, before I submit/ send/ post it. Say, we copy paste a long text from somewhere to some forum post, but it has original formatting or junks in between that need to be cleaned up. Firefox seems not to have realized that user would be typing anything to the web page, thus simple option like replace/ replace-all remain missing. -- V |

Try the "It's All Text!" extension, which will let you easily use your text editor of choice instead of editor built into Fx. <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4125> When you save or close the text editor, the text is sent back to the browser. If you want to keep a copy, it's handy to use "save" instead of "close", then after you submit to the web, you can use "save as" in the text editor. It's also handy in case the net connection goes screwy or Fx crashes; you won't lose the text you were in the middle of editing. |

Re: need replace option in firefox
That is a nice add-on, but what I think the OP was stating (and what
I'd like to see) is a Replace option for the Find bar. For example, we can download the add-on to add regular expressions to the find bar, but I've seen nothing to add a Replace option to the find bar, so that we can find and replace text without using an external text editor. With so many forums, blogs, and this whole over-marketed "Internet 2.0", we have a high-level of interaction, but poor tools to really make use of it. |

Please quote SOME portion of the previous messages so there is some context. As is, your comments mean nothing because you didn't quote the OP's post, nor anything else. Without context, your post is meaningless garble. Sure, I could go back and re-read the thread from the beginning, but doing that for all the threads I read in a day would mean I spend 24 hours a day in the newsgroup. |

Firefox is a web browser, not an editor. You cannot replace text on a web page using a web browser. |

You cannot replace text on a > web page using a web browser. I have explained and Vipher Nemo has also similar requirement. We know that firefox is a browser and it is different from Notepad, Wordpad, MSWord, OOWriter, Metapad, TedNotepad etc. :=) Haven't you ever typed anything IN FIREFOX? say, did you ever go to yahoo or gmail and composed mail or replies? say, did you access Google groups and posted new threads of replied to someone else's post in some newsgroup, in firefox? say, did you ever access and BB, forum in firefox? say, have you sent scrap on orkut or equivalent messages on similar sites like facebook, or any dating site. say, do you have a blog that you created and are updating in firefox? say, have you ever entered/ changed anything in Wiki or in IMDB in firefox. say, have you ever created a website within firefox? -- You must have, trillions of times and each time you have typed in firefox. You even copied from somewhere and pasted there in firefox. Now, we can type in firefox, and even paste into firefox, but there is no method of correcting/ changing what we have typed/ pasted to it. btw, now even spell checker is available and working superbly. but no REPLACE function. Firefox is still in the days when web was non-interactive and we were supposed to read what the site was sending us (though I wonder that forums, newsgroups, PMs were always there). So, a Replace/ Replace Again, Replace All is needed, that would NOT change what the site sent to us, but would change only the TextArea entries that we typed/ pasted. Welcome to Web 2.0! -- V |

And, I think when greasemonkey allows us to change what a website has sent us, then what you are saying (replacing text on a web page) should be allowed interactively. What harm would it do. Maybe firefox or some add-on can just memorize the url and the find/ replace strings and does that everytime we visit that page. Then, we will not see "BigBoobs" on a dating site and see a nicer sounding "Pamela Aunty". Would it harm the cause of firefox? Anyway. That is just a thought and not related to my original requirement. I am putting this new part to gm forum also, where I think it is more likely to find taker. thanks. -- V |
