Plug-ins and Extensions
I was having crashes with FF 3.0 and 3.0.1, so I created a new profile
in profile manager, then I deleted the old profile in profile manager, leaving the files intact. copied over only a few things (passwords, bookmarks, site specific settings I think). Then I deleted the old profile directory altogether. But I still have a lot of plugins and one extension when FF loads. That may be ok, but why are they still there? Souldn't axeing the old profile get rid of them, or at least have FF not recognize them? |

You should not have had any extensions in the new profile unless you copied the extensions subdirectory into it. |

They are stored in the Program Files directory for Firefox. What one extension? |

The extension is the AVG Safe Search extension. My whole goal here is to try a clean profile to see if it stops crashing, and I can't say for sure on that. And I thought an earlier post said to create a new directory, migrate over just what you wanted to keep, but that meant re-installing all the plug-ins because they'd go away with the new profile. But not the case. |

Then retry the profile delete and new profile. Should be without the AVG extension. |

There are a lot of plugins that reappeared when I created the new profile. Do they download with FF3? If not, how do I get rid of them to do a clean install? And is there a list of suspect or problem Plugins? |

All those *.dll files are the plug-ins you installed. [When you go to Adobe to install Shockwave a .dll is put in the plugins folder.] I never paid attention if any plugins come preloaded with FF beside one called Mozilla default. Some media players like Windows Media Player or VLC load from their own program folder instead of Mozilla plugins. You could move all the dlls out of the plugins folder or open the Extension Manager and go to Plugins to disable the ones you don't want to run. |
