Cache problem

While surfing I just stumbled across an advertised utility whose purpose
is to empty your cache apparently on an ongoing, real time basis.

Might some other utility I'm using be doing this to my cache on the sly?
If so, any suggestions on ferreting it out?

Windows/Linus Run it yourself in your own BAT file, if and only if
you know what you are doing -- DEL command

Firefox vers 3.0: Tools, Options, Advanced, Network, Clear Now

Want it automatic in Firefox:
Tools, Options, Privacy, Private Data, under settings only select cache, then
back under Private Data choose your options Because the settings is
is hidden, I would personally not recommend doing this automatically
because settings might vary if you have/create more than one profile.

Is the clearing being done "on the fly" or only on shutdown of FF? If
the latter, check:
Tools>>Options>>Privacy>>Private Data

I assume you mean "check it out" as opposed to "put a check on it."

Both. Sometimes "on the fly" doesn't clear the cache but it does most of
the time.

"Always clear..." is unchecked and always has been.

I've noticed that altho images are cleared the "Visited links" remain
color changed.

I'm not sure what you are getting at. I want Firefox to stop clearing my
cache and I have all the correct settings to make it stop, but it clears
cache anyway. I'm afraid I'm going to have to do a dreaded total removal
and reinstallation of Firefox.

(Actually I always have had the correct settings. I've always cleared
cache in Mozilla only manually for years. This just started clearing even
with settings telling it not to.)

Sorry, misread.
Do you have more than one profile, check about:cache
or browser.cache.disk.parent_directory with a folder name.
Did you restore one profile to a new profile from a read-only CD-Rom
that or similar can turn on read only attributes, though I would expect
you'd have a lot more problems, if you had.

Before taking such drastic action, I suggest you create a new profile
and try running with it to see if the problem persists. To the extent
possible I would not move *any* data from the old profile.

Check for settings in any adware, spyware, and even anti-virus scanners for a
cache clearing feature. Crap Cleaner has an option under
[Cleaner]>[Applications] to clear the Firefox cache. Report any
cleaning/optimizing software you have and probably someone here can help you
find an offending setting.

Make sure you don't have a preference set in "user.js" which would override the
settings you make in the GUI or about:config.

Try running Firefox in -safe-mode to make sure some extension isn't clearing the
cache, if so, it should have an option to turn that feature off.

Reinstalling Firefox virtually _never_ fixes anything. Any changes in the
program behavior are made in settings in the profile which is not effected by
reinstalling.

I've never messed with profiles since I moved up to Firefox. There is
only one.

I've been curious as to why there are two sets of application data:

1. documents and settings -> name -> application data -> mozilla, etc.

2. documents and settings -> name -> local settings -> application data ->
mozilla, etc.

Any chance this could effect it? #1 doesn't have a cache.

Any chance of identifying where the bug is stored so I can delete it and
reset instead of uninstalling the whole Firefox?

Hmmmmmmmmm. I don't even remember how that worked when I was using the sea urchin or whatever it was. Research time.
