Should it be 'unsorted bookmarks' or 'unfiled bookmarks'
On my FF 3.01 I have the 'unfiled bookmarks' folder and not the
'unsorted bookmarks' folder, it is doing the same thing, storing the bookmark when you press the "Awesomebar" Bookmark Star. My question is, what is the correct default setting for FF3.0, 'unsorted bookmarks' or 'unfiled bookmarks'. |

Minor system discrepancy On some systems (Windows) it is called unfiled bookmarks On other systems (Mac) is it called unsorted bookmarks not sure about Linux in this case they are the same thing |

I believe someone found that if it says 'unfiled', then you got it from an older install, and if it says 'unsorted', then it came from a clean install. |

Actually if you were to create a new profile on Windows now it would indicate "Unsorted bookmarks", also on the Bookmarks Menu you would now see a shortcut of Ctrl+Shift+B for Organize Bookmarks. Even though called "Unsorted bookmarks" you can sort them, but you now have to sort on the folders rather than within a folder so you have to sort independently "Bookmarks Toolbar", "Bookmarks Menu" and the "Unfiled Bookmarks"/"Unsorted Bookmarks" The instant bookmarking into the "Unfiled"/"Unsorted" places a heavy penalty on experienced users who use bookmarks folders and were willing to choose where bookmarks went into, which is something that used to stick but now always reverts to the new folder. The new bookmarking has created many problems for which counter solutions have been created and they in turn create problems, so that it is hard to retain a bookmark a page where you actually want it in a new folder, or to create another bookmark with the same url in another folder as an existing bookmark. -- HTH, David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site Firefox Custom: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm |

There is no "New Folder" button, and if you were to add the missing button you can end up with a messed up places file, that has to be restored. Before if you bookmarked a file, you would be able to put the next bookmark into to the same folder because it would be already set to do that and you would see that, of course you could choose another location. The "Star" system has to bookmark the page before you even can tailor the bookmark to how you want it, so it has to put it into "Unfiled"/"Unsorted" folder. The most important two features of Firefox bookmarks are description (was in Netscape), and keyword shortcut. The "Star" system hides Keyword, and pushes unwieldy Tags (at least as implemented). -- HTH, David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site Firefox Custom: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm That's for starters. bookmark |

The new folder button was present and did work, in both 3.0 and 3.0.1 with old and new profiles, last time I messed up my bookmarks was on Saturday., Oh well, that's good, can't think of any reason why it works now for me and not before. The folder not sticking is collateral damage to forcing people into "Unfiled"/"Unsorted" and is not the same as in version 2. Pushing tags and trying to suppress keywords usages for new users is a quality problem, makes for ignorant users. They made tags visible and not keyword. |

Um, what problem? In the above tests if I saved a bookmark in the NEW folder I created then when I went to save another bookmark, THAT folder (the new one) was the default! So what is with this 'sticking' you claim? It 'sticks' to the last folder you used. > Pushing tags and trying to suppress keywords usages for new users > is a quality problem, makes for ignorant users. They made tags visible > and not keyword. Ignorance is as Ignorance does. Your <New> button works now Your 'sticking' problem is resolved as well (here it is) that's two out of three so whats your problem, you prefer keywords instead of tags? Well then maybe you should have been on the development team. Obviously they felt otherwise. Nothing is going to be perfect, or always exactly the way we want it. I would have been pleased had they chosen not to include a pop up blocker, but they did, so I adjust my settings to compensate. Perhaps you can do the same? |
