Cannot start Firefox as a normal user

Hello,

I am using Linux Fedora Core 5.
After a recent "yum update", which installed firefox-1.5.0.2-1.2.fc5
on my system, I can no longer start Firefox : a button labelled
"Starting Firefox Web Browser" appears in the taskbar for a few seconds
but that's all (the button disappears and nothing happens).

After reading at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/releases/1.5.0.2.html
that ...
"If Firefox 1.5.0.2 is installed on a multi-user system in a location
which is not writable by users, Firefox must be run once by a
privileged user"
.... I su-ed to root and successfully started it but after that I am
still unable to start it as a regular user.

Any idea?

Thanks

Do you have a Firewall on your system?

Quote from the Firefox release notes:

"Some firewall software may silently block Firefox from running. Most
firewalls will ask you whether to allow a program to connect to the
Internet. It's important that you always grant Firefox access. If you
deny access, you must go into the firewall's configuration program and
re-allow access. Even when disabled, some firewalls deny access. Here is
some more information on configuring your firewall
<http://kb.mozillazine.org/Error_loading_any_website#Firewalls>."

Re: Cannot start Firefox as a normal user

Thank you very much for your reply.

I have tried to disable my firewall but to no avail : FireFox won't
start.

Maybe this is irrelevant information but I have no problem to start the
Mozilla browser (I must admit my ideas on the relationship between both
browsers are not very clear ! ).

I'll continue investigating & let you know if I solve the problem.

Regards.

Re: Cannot start Firefox as a normal user

The problem has been solved by removing .mozilla/ under my normal
user's homedir.

After doing that, the first attempt to run Firefox produced a warning
box saying that :
"Firefox could not install this item because 'install.rdf' (provided by
the item) is not well formed or does not exist".

I clicked on OK and Firefox started.

You've got the upgrade then? Must have been a hiccup in the install
procedure.

I was using a dial up connection through earthlink. I recently switched to
dsl through earthlink and now I can't get Firefox to work at all? Can
anyone point me in the right direction for what I need to do? Thanks
