Script endangers FF
Hi, @ all
following another thread here, I ran a Google search, which came up with this URL: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Steatopygous After a couple of seconds, I got a warning box, saying that the site was running a script that was causing FF (here FF 1.0.7) to run slowly and would possibly, if left running, cause my system to collapse! Anyone who can replicate this - and anyone know what causes it?? I have *never* seen this error-message before! reg |

You've got some extension running, and/or 2. You need to change the car around the oil (FF 1.0.7 -> FF 1.5.x) ....on the other hand, after clicking [Search] for Steatopygous (nice word...), the page seems to never finish loading (it does, eventually), keeping at some silly business first with a googlesyndication link, then with a a.freedictionary.com link. Checking page source for culprit candidates: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script> and <td align=right nowrap><iframe width=170 height=60 scrolling=no frameborder=0 SRC="http://a.thefreedictionary.com/get.aspx?site=dictionary&size=120x60"></iframe></td> Any smarter takers from here on? BR, Gudmund |

Type about:config in the URL address bar and pressing enter. Then dom.max_script_run_time in the filter bar what is your current value? try increasing it and restart FF Ian |

I cannot recall if it was before or after I upgraded to 1.5. It was on a Yahoo message board. It only appeared when one specific flash ad appeared. Other flash ads ran fine. After a while, I could tell when it was going to appear, as FF would slow to a crawl, unable to scroll, etc. The message would appear & give me the option of killing the script or allowing it to continue. After killing it, FF would respond normally again. A few days after emailing Yahoo about the problem, the ad seemed to disappear from the rotation. Whether or not they got enough complaints, or the advertiser just went on to a new ad, who knows. That was the only time I have come across that error message. FWIW, I did not have any problems with your cited URL, using 1.5.0.2. -- Alex |

Do you know what the max value would be, or what size changes make a difference? As it is *only* this one site - so far - I won't worry about it, especially as Gudmund also seems to have detected some bad codelines.. but it is interesting 8-) reg |

Re: Script endangers FF
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Dom.max_script_run_time
Setting this preference to 0 will allow the script to run for as long as it needs. However, I wouldn't recommend that. Set it to some high value. |
