Because I cannot find out how to configure it for a private proxy which will
require authentication.

I'm not sure which part is the problem. Finding the proxy-dialog or
what? So perhaps this "tutorial" made by someone else for some other
people helps you too:

Hi, the problem is I don't seem able to find space to enter username and
password in order to use a private proxy service?

When it access the proxy, it will ask you for them at that time,
not in advance. It will also offer the option of saving the
username and password.
