since changing to tbird I am finding it difficult to send emails Problems
are as follows
1/ Even short messages take a long time to send or are rejected
2/emails with attachments get rejected most of the time
3/ When message rejected screen message says server not responding to SMTP
connection
Have changed back to Outlook Express and have no problems

It sounds like you need to verify/set the mail Account Settings/Server
Settings (inbound) and Tools/Account Settings/Outgoing SMTP server
(outbound).
(*Note*: the latter is a the very bottom of the left column.)

You may have to contact your ISP if necessary for some account
specifications, like user name, server type, mail type (and port),
besides security (SSL) and authentication (by user name & password)
requirements.
