Can't connect to Sympatico SMTP outgoing server

Just signed on with Sympatico (Bell Canada). Can receive mail in T-bird and
send and receive in Outlook but cannot connect to Sympatico's outgoing SMTP
server or send email in T-bird. Over the past week 8 tech support people
over 10-15 hours of phone time have gone at this. They finally got Outlook
going but that didn't help with the T-bird problem.

All the settings have been checked multiple times, I even went to Bell's
support site to check that I had the right setting for my email address.

What is truly weird is that the SMTP server of my old ISP works in
Sympatico. (I haven't cancelled the account yet.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew

Tools > Options > Privacy > Passwords > Edit Saved Passwords
From there, click Show Passwords button and check see whether your
saved SMTP Username & Password are correct or not.

AFAIK, Tb won't show anything if you have an incorrect password for SMTP
account. Your outgoing emails are simply going nowhere!

Hope this will help.

Difficulties I have had too with them as they sternly do not
support any one with Thunderbird, so you just need to be
lucky to get a friendly support. But you suggest you may
have had old settings once with Sympatico? People in the
past who joined between certain times were given different
settings, and tho they will say that everyone is to use same
now it is not true. Some still have to use an older settings
to send and I am one of those. My outgoing needs to be set
at b1xxx smtp1.sympatico.ca not the smtphm or whatever. For
a while I I even had to use the TLS instead of SSL but that
is fine now. So give a try. If your password not set it will
ask, sometimes asks a few times to set I do not know why. As
you can send, it shows that your settings with the msn seem
okay.

You username with sympatico is your B1 number, not your email addy
The password is the one assigned to your account (you should have been
told that)
You should have the sympatico server on the Settings page

Tools-->Account Settings-->Outgoing Server (SMTP)
select the sympatico server (should be in the list) click <Edit>
The server name should be as Sympatico stated
Your Username should be your Sympatico B1 number NOT your email id
Your Password will be remembered when you type it it, use the password
the Sympatico techs gave you.

These are settings I use which work,
Account Settings - <(emailname)@sympatico.ca>

ACCOUNT NAME: b1xxxx

Default Identity:

Your Name: (your name)
Email Address: (emailname)@sympatico.ca
Reply to Address:
(emailname)@sympatico.ca

Outgoing Server:
b1xxxx - smtp1.sympatico.ca - or smtphm.sympatico.ca

Second Screen,
SERVER SETTINGS:

Server Name: pophm.sympatico.ca
Port: 995
User Name: (emailname)@sympatico.ca

Security Settings: SSL

The recommendation to use any password that Support may give
you is important, write that down and don’t lose it. They
often will change your password to make it easier to access
your settings, and so if you go to use your own password
again, things will not work.

Ask also to be sure, if they are changing your email
password, or your b1xxx password. I have had them both
changed and been in a real mess by not realizing which one
they had changed.

You need the b1xxx password to get into the “Self Help” area
through “My Bell” so you can change your own passwords to
what you want or make other changes to your account such as
adding more email addresses.
http://www.bell.ca/mybell/PrsMyAccts...ge?language=en
or
http://tinyurl.com/56n7yx

It is also the b1xxx you put in a couple places in your
Tools > Account Settings as shown, but the email passwords
are as said, different. The program asks automatically but
to find them, just Tools > Options > Privacy > Saved
Passwords. Check in there to see what has been saved, and
remove any old passwords may help.

In the outgoing server section the userid should be the b1 number NOT
your email address

Moz Champion, that is exactly what I said, please read my
answer,

>> b1xxxx - smtp1.sympatico.ca - or smtphm.sympatico.ca

Think the original poster needs to respond as to whether any
of these threads are helpful
before further help is useful.

You use your b1 number as your email address?

You stated

Second Screen,
SERVER SETTINGS:

Server Name: pophm.sympatico.ca
Port: 995
User Name: (emailname)@sympatico.ca

For example my b1 number which in Sever Settings above
is b1xxxxxxxxx but my email is moz.champion
so User Name: in the above should say

Port: 995
User Name: (b1number)

NOT (emailname)@anything

Nope. As said, I just gave my exact “Account Settings”.

My User Name for the Server Settings is
emailname@sympatico.ca. I have several email accounts. For
each one, the User Name is filled in with the email address.

If yours is filled in with your b1xxxx rather than your
email, then that just illustrates the usefulness of
different people providing their different information to
people looking for help, rather than suggesting only one
right answer. :)

All I was trying to do here is give some ideas to this
person, not write a definite on settings for anything. Both
our settings work. Maybe one will work if not tried already.
Maybe something else contained in these threads will help.
As said, it would be useful to have further input from the
original poster at this point as that is the concern of the
thread. :)

Re: Can't connect to Sympatico SMTP outgoing server

You people have given me more ideas than 9 Sympatico techs put together, 3
of whom took over my computer and entered what they thought were the correct
entries. Back to you tomorrow when I have an hour or so to find out if the
suggestions work. In the meantime, thank you.
