Evolution can't send or receive

Running Ubuntu 8.04 with Evolution 2.22.2. Last friday my pc froze, so I
ctrl-alt-backspace and logged in again. From then onwards the send/receive
button in Evolution is blank, i.e. the text on the button is very pale and
clicking it does nothing. Composing an email and sending leaves the email
sitting in the outbox.

I've tried removing and re-installing Evolution via Synaptic, but no luck.

Any suggestions, besides using another email client?

TIA

Rob

There hasn't happen anything with the evolution binaries or default
settings, so re-installing will not do any difference.

Look for where evolution stores it's files in your home directory
(hidden files), one of those files has most likely been damaged,
removing the file will solve your problem (which file to remove I don't
know).

Check that you have not clicked the offline button in the menu.

Also, just a guess, but look for a .LOCK file in /var/lock
Maybe evolution was in the middle of some operation when you killed everything
and the lock didnt get cleaned up.

In this case it is not relevant, as you have clearly logged out and in
again in the meantime. However ... after killing evolution with c-a-bs or
with a 'kill' it is wise to do a
evolution --force-shutdown
otherwise the data server may still be running.

"Work off-line" greys out the buttons. Select File > work on-line;
allows you to use the send/receive button.

Check your processes for an errant Evolution PID, purge
~/.evolution/cache/*.

Use stable software rather than the Debian "testing" branch Ubuntu
employees.

Abandon the Windows mentality. What could de/re-installing possibly do?

Easier said than done. Senses gradually begin to abandon the ones like me
when stuck with cul de sac issues. I "installed" new kernel and screwed
system from bad to worse to the point that reinstalling remained the only
option. May or never be the last resort for many experts here, but for some,
reinstalling does bring some peace of mind, though not always.

Probably not the same as your problem but check the ~/.evolution/mail/
local/ directory. (I think that's the one.) I had an Inbox file that
was over 2 billion bytes. Programmers and other geeky types will hear
a minor chord when they read that because that's typical of 32-bit
signed integer overflow, where very big positive numbers turn into
very big negative numbers. By renaming Inbox to Inbox.disabled I was
able to get the receive function working again. I tried to nano
Inbox.disabled to delete the one offending message, but that took
forever so I aborted it.

This was on my wife's ubuntu desktop. Her symptoms were: froze,
rebooted, Inbox and maybe one other folder mysteriously empty. The
Send/Receive button was NOT greyed out as you reported. And I could
actually send messages. But, here was my horrifying symptom:

Clicking Send/Receive popped up the little dialog which
disappeared in a fraction of a second.
Flash and it was gone.

There was no error message. No fetching of new mail. In retrospect
this must be what happens when the Inbox has negative infinity bytes
of contents. My wife's cousin sends her lots of pictures of ...
er ... naughty bits, so I'm sure it was her tacit fault. At least I
didn't have to see any of them to fix it.

Checking for File | Offline was a good contribution, zappa, that has
tripped me up before.
