O'vercurrent Change 'message

Hi all,

While I boot Fedora 9, just before it displays the Nash Version Fedora
message, it displays a message as shown below

1-0:1.0-Overcurrent hub change on port 7.

Whatever this means? Can someone please shed some light on this?

Regards,

Arty

Hello Arty:

Rather than summarize what's there, Google: Linux Over-current hub suggests
you might want to unplug some unused USB devices till your system has finished
its bootup.

If this fixes it, tell us what you did.

Best wishes.

You may have a device sucking (too) much power on usb port 7.
If it is a hub, consider using the supplied extra power brick.
Or try to put at least one device drawing much current, to another port (not
8).

Hi 1PW,

Googling didn't prove much helpful but your suggestion helps me. However,
as my system is a dual-boot, the question arises WHY should I keep on
plugging and unplugging the USB devices? Its a bit cumbersome. Alright,
am willing to try it, plugging them as I need in XP and unplugging in
Fedora. However, I wish to know if XP is merely ignoring the over-current
message or is it only Linux which detects something like this? Has it
anything to do with an increase in consumption of electricity?

TIA,
Regards,
Arty

A USB device is not supposed to draw more than 0.5amp (500ma) from a
port ! What the message is telling you is that you have a device
plugged into a port that is drawing more than this amount of current.
Probably an unpowered hub that has more than one device plugged into
it.

The cure is simple ! Just plug the device drawing the highest current
directly into a mainboard port, or use a powered hub.

Printers in any case should be plugged into the mainboard ports ! They
can become iffy or not work at all when used into a hub.

Hi Arty:

I also have dual boot (XP Pro & RHEL5.2) capability. I believe the other
posters are very accurate in their theories. I also believe your suspicion
that your XP USB driver isn't detecting the over current condition is also
very possible. With so many devices going USB, it's only a short time
before you and I get our USB powered beer can coolers! :-)

Perhaps it's time you start your search for a powered USB. I've got one.

Best to you,

Hi all,

I booted by UNPLUGGING all USB devices, but problem persists. Same over-
current message is displayed. Changing the devices to other ports also
gives out the same message. I do not remember having changed anything on
the motherboard. Incidentally, Suse linux and RHEL 5 also did not give
any such error. So what's it with Fedora 9 that makes it display the
message?

TIA,

Arty

In that case I wouldn't worry too much ! But before you dismiss it,
take a close look at the sockets and see if there is any damage to any
of them. Broken or bent pins. I've seen a few where the socket has
been damaged and the 5 volt pin has been touching the shroud. Any
damaged ones should be replaced or if possible unplugged from the
mainboard.
