O'vercurrent Change 'message
Hi all,
While I boot Fedora 9, just before it displays the Nash Version Fedora message, it displays a message as shown below 1-0:1.0-Overcurrent hub change on port 7. Whatever this means? Can someone please shed some light on this? Regards, Arty |

If this fixes it, tell us what you did. Best wishes. -- 1PW @?6A62?FEH9:DE=6o2@=]4@> [r4o7t] |

Or try to put at least one device drawing much current, to another port (not 8). |

Hi 1PW, Googling didn't prove much helpful but your suggestion helps me. However, as my system is a dual-boot, the question arises WHY should I keep on plugging and unplugging the USB devices? Its a bit cumbersome. Alright, am willing to try it, plugging them as I need in XP and unplugging in Fedora. However, I wish to know if XP is merely ignoring the over-current message or is it only Linux which detects something like this? Has it anything to do with an increase in consumption of electricity? TIA, Regards, Arty |

What the message is telling you is that you have a device plugged into a port that is drawing more than this amount of current. Probably an unpowered hub that has more than one device plugged into it. The cure is simple ! Just plug the device drawing the highest current directly into a mainboard port, or use a powered hub. Printers in any case should be plugged into the mainboard ports ! They can become iffy or not work at all when used into a hub. -- Best Regards: Baron. |

I believe the other posters are very accurate in their theories. I also believe your suspicion that your XP USB driver isn't detecting the over current condition is also very possible. With so many devices going USB, it's only a short time before you and I get our USB powered beer can coolers! :-) Perhaps it's time you start your search for a powered USB. I've got one. Best to you, -- 1PW @?6A62?FEH9:DE=6o2@=]4@> [r4o7t] |

Changing the devices to other ports also gives out the same message. I do not remember having changed anything on the motherboard. Incidentally, Suse linux and RHEL 5 also did not give any such error. So what's it with Fedora 9 that makes it display the message? TIA, Arty |

But before you dismiss it, take a close look at the sockets and see if there is any damage to any of them. Broken or bent pins. I've seen a few where the socket has been damaged and the 5 volt pin has been touching the shroud. Any damaged ones should be replaced or if possible unplugged from the mainboard. -- Best Regards: Baron. |
