Hello all,
I'm pretty new to linux, and I have a Q about where to post my Q. I was
using lynx on a gnome terminal with irssi in another tab. In lynx I g.
google.com and got a bad request error.I tried the bookmark , same thing.
I closed the terminal, restarted it, same thing. I can still get to google
with graphical browser, and using lynx in console. I suspect irc or irssi
did something, and I'm not sure where to post. I sent email to google
security, no response yet, and posted to google search user group. Any
advice where to go for help?

This advice may or may not help, but I had a similar problem, and my
solution was to set GLOBAL_MAILCAP to "none" in /etc/lynx.cfg. If that
doesn't work, try to find out what HTTP headers you are sending to the
web servers. A webserver on your computer could help in this. Also, some
security-related web sites will report your HTTP headers to you.

BTW, did you know your post ends with a long string of seemingly random

That's very different from what I get when I don't set GLOBAL_MAILCAP to
"none."

Try it using rxvt or the konsole (KDE). Take a look into /etc/lynx.cfg
and see if you can find any obvious culprits. Close irssi (temporarily)
and see if that helps.

I"m not sure what you mean by rxvt? I know what konsole is the kde
equilivent to GNOME Terminal 2.14.2 which what I was I was usin, GNOME
Terminal 2.14.2 that is. Is rxvt the the main text line you get when you
ctrl alt f1? I can still get to google with lynx from the, ctrl alt f1
text environment, But not with GNOME Terminal 2.14.2 I don't have kde
installed. What do you call these so people know what you're talking about
GNOME Terminal 2.14.2 or konsole vrs the text terminal you get to with
ctrl alt f1, Is that the console , and the others terminals?

The text console you get with Ctrl-Alt-F1 is often called a virtual
console; however, you got the term right: text console.

Rxvt is an alternate X terminal emulator for Xorg; it's similar to the
konsole or gnome-terminal. There are many X terminal emulators for
Debian. Go into 'aptitude' and search for "x-terminal-emulator"; there
are many options.

You need to see what HTTP headers you lynx browser is sending. I wrote a
script that, when run under Apache, lets me see what HTTP headers are
sent by my browser, and that's how I found how why Google wouldn't
accept Lynx requests.

If that option is a bit too "techy" for you, there are probably some
websites that will let you see your HTTP headers.

Just to let you know, I wasn't able to fix lynx, but it was suggested
elswhere that I try lynx-cur or w3m. I'm trying both. lynx-cur worked at
first, but now seems to be getting buggy. However w3m won't be as hard to
learn to use as I had feared. No problems from w3m so far, fingers crossed.

"lynx -trace" will log the request and response (as well as a lot of
other detail). The logfile's normally written to $HOME/Lynx.trace
