In Safeway's place were Food Barns. Then they were all replaced with Price Choppers, which are mostly owned by a local grocery supplier, Associated Wholesale Grocers. http://www.awginc.com AWG also bought Food-4-Less stores owned by Fleming Foods, the top supplier for independent grocers, plus the Albertsons in Kansas.
