Formate mass storage

Hello,

simple problem, but many complications:
first: I use Debian Etch stable and i want to use a USB stick, Normally no
problem. But this device is problematic. The vendor doesn't seem to use the
regular USB protocol. This means:

a) In Linux the file system is not recognized. The easy way should be that i
plug it in and KDE tells me that it wants to mount it. The failure message
is "A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this
message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected
message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount"
error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")
b) Similar shit in Windows - inaccessable

I didn't care and I mounted it with mount /dev/sda /usbstick/",
Device /dev/sda according to
tail -f /var/log/messages
sg_map
sg_scan -i
(usbstick is my mountpoint for stuff like this)
It is not mounted on the regular /dev/sda1 or /dev/sda2 but anyway I can
copy some files on it - OK The filesystem doesn't seem to be the problem
(but i'm was a little nervous not to play with important devices)

At least I want to format the hole crap. Hmmm, which program to take?
mformat /usbstick wants me too much parameters (heads/sectors and so on).
THE QUESTION IS: Because I often have to migrate date between Linux and
Windows I need a convenient program which does the job for me. apt-cache
search 'format' doesn't help.
Anyone some help for a lazy guy? Thanks in advance

If you chose not to format it - say to get a refund, and can afford one,
Lexar's Firefly's work out of box and a GIG is about 20USD in my neck of
the woods (Rocky Mountains of US). Steer clear of the 'encrypted'
models.

I formatted my external storage as ext2 and use the ext2ifs.exe windows
driver for read/write access. There are several other drivers like
this also.

Thanks a lot to all for the kind help.

Since I formatted the wrong external flash device with fdisk I use it only
after heavy meditation and sacrifying a goat.

This it is. The GUI of gparted gives me a short time lap to choose the right
partition. It is good manageable. And that strange USB stick behaved well
after formatting it with fat16. I mounted it trouble-free on Linux an
Windows.

Yes I know that program. AFAIK it doesn't work under XP SP2. And in my
editorial office they use Win XP and Visat (and are quite unhappy. But
there is no alternative to Adobe Indesign). Furthermore i can't install
ext2ifs.exe on every computer.

I'm lucky to get journalistic informations often on USB sticks so I don't
have to buy it :-)

Kind regards
