Hal with no desktop?

I dream about using HAL (Hardware abstraction layer) without having to
run a desktop environment like Gnome, Kde or Xfce.

I mostly use the cli on top of a minimalist window manager (evilwm), and
I envision running a neat script from the command line that lists
devices automounted by the help of HAL!

I see no evidence that HAL depends on X, let alone a "desktop". Here are
the dependencies of the hal package:

Depends: libc6 (>= 2.7-1), libdbus-1-3 (>= 1.0.2), libdbus-glib-1-2 (>=
0.71), libexpat1 (>= 1.95.8), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1), libglib2.0-0 (>=
2.16.0), libhal-storage1 (>= 0.5.11~rc2), libhal1 (>= 0.5.10), libsmbios1,
libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.1), libusb-0.1-4 (>= 2:0.1.12), libvolume-id0 (>=
0.113), adduser, pciutils, usbutils, udev (>= 0.065), dbus (>= 0.61),
lsb-base, hal-info (>= 20070402), pm-utils, mount (>= 2.13)

HAL does not depend on these desktops, but they use HAL for automounting
devices and such. Try 'lshal --monitor' to see what happens when you
add a USB device, for example.

No problem in principle. You might use ivman instead of the desktop
tools to listen to the D-bus and trigger events.
