I'll have to reinstall my Gentoo . I've already downloades stage3 and
portage from a mirror . I have no gentoo live or install CD , do I have to
get one, or can I install from my running ubuntu, and chroot to the gentoo
system to install it as I would do with a CD?

thanks for your help

You can use any livecd to install Gentoo. Just boot the computer with your
preferred livecd (eg, ubuntu, knoppix) and follow the instructions in the
Gentoo handbook. You won't be able to use stages from the CD as you would
if you used a Gentoo livecd, but this doesn't matter as you can download
everything from Internet (if you haven't already).
You can also use an existing running distro, by chrooting into the partition
where you intend to install Gentoo.

See the following document, sections 3 and 5.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml

I have similar problem with installation. My laptop is not equipped with
CDROM nor USB boot. The only boot option available is via the harddisk
or network. My laptop is now installed with Ubuntu Breezy. There is still
7 GB of free space. My harddisk is partitioned into swap and root, nothing
else. I want to install gentoo replacing the Ubuntu. So I think about 2
method to install. One is by booting the installer image from existing and
loaded Ubuntu, and then do the partition (and of course deleting the
installer image) and installation. Two is by loading the installer image
from PXE network. None of it is mentioned in
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml

I mean, it is mentioned in above link, but that does not meets my
condition. The network method is to make thin client, which is what I do
not intend to do. And the existing Linux method need to boot my laptop
using CDROM to resize my partition. If I could boot my laptop from CDROM,
then I will install it directly.

So... any other suggestion to me?

You could make a USBinstall, boot from it and run from the ubs-memory as
you would have done from a CD-Rom.

Or try this PXE

You don't need an install CD. You can install it from a running ubuntu.
