Is there sone GUI tool available that allows me to browse and search all
packages in the portage tree with descriptions and everything?
(Something like YaST or the one in Red Hat/Fedora for example).

Take a look at app-portage/kuroo
there are other too.

For something for gnome, but works well under kde, try app-portage/porthole

Don't forget that he gets to take public transportation (metro) in a helmet
