Recovering KDE

I thought this subject would have been treated extensively before, but I
found .....

Yesterday my system had a kind of a crash (well, it blocked temporarily, I
got out of X with CTRL-ALT Backspace) and then I could shutdown. It all was
caused by one of my disks dropping out.

Anyway, this morning I started, all seemed well, but for my usual user-id,
KDE bounced out after a while. I checked for another user, all OK.

So I moved for my regular user mv .kde .kde.old and kde started OK.
Now I wanted my settings back, and as I want to be on the safe side, I won't
just copy the whole .kde back, so I started copying files and directories
back. That got me my Autostart back, my settings of Knode and some more.

But two problems I cannot find the solution for:
1. Firefox and Thunderbird start as if it all was the first time. Sure all
the xyz123-kind-of-name directories are there in ~/.mozilla and
~/.thunderbird, but KDE does not find where to find these when starting, so
it must miss some pointer file?
2. (a bit less important, but still) I did not find to restore my settings
for Konqueror, nor for my KDE most-recent-programs list.

All help is very much appreciated.

Check the path in:
~/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini
~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini

~/.kde/share/apps/konq*
~/.kde/share/config/konq*rc

~/.kde/share/apps/RecentDocuments

There had been made a new profile, I first tried to redirect FF to the old
one, but despite deleting the lock file, it was a no-go, kept
complaining "already running". I got more or less away by copying
bookmark.html and alike. Less than optimal, but I can live without.

> ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini

This file looks :
General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=izash8xg.default

and
..thunderbird]$ ls -als
total 40
4 drwxr-xr-x 3 herman herman 4096 2007-01-30 15:41 ./
24 drwxr-xr-x 142 herman herman 20480 2008-06-27 16:20 ../
4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 herman herman 335 2007-01-30 15:41 appreg
4 drwxr-xr-x 6 herman herman 4096 2008-06-27 16:53 izash8xg.default/
4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 herman herman 94 2007-01-30 15:41 profiles.ini

I deleted the parentlock file, but no avail, TH comes up blank, i.e. with
the "create account" wizard
I also checked the config editor, and sure there is no reference found to
whatever accout or server, and surely I recognize the directories and files
in izash8xg.default, so why the hell??????

Did the trick, I didn't try before ad I wasn't sure understanding all the
implications, tx a lot.

that was usefull as well, but not what I meant, I was asking for the list of
most-recent-used-programs, that you get on top of the KDE menu

It's been some time since I used thunderbird, but try IsRelative=0

Sorry, I misread. If you have it set in
kcontrol/Desktop/Panels/Menus/Quickstart Menu Items it will be re-built as
you use the system. Is that what you want? I don't know where the actual
program links are stored.

The "already running" is misleading, it often means "cannot run with these
settings" because something got b0rked in the old profile.

Well I ended recreating my accounts, and then checked
~/.thunderbird/xxxx/Mail
and I found new directories created Local Folders-1 and mailxxx-1
The old folders Local Folders and mailxxx still existed and had the latest
files, so I copied all files over to the newly created directories and TB
was OK , all info present.
I found then that references to these directories were in prefs.js, but how
trashing KDE impacted this file, beats me.

Anyway, I'm back in a workable situation, I'll leave it at that, but I
learned a few things in the process.
Tx for your help.
