On Mandriva 2008.1 Spring Powerpack (both X86_64 and i586)
Has anyone succeeded in getting HSDPA to work on HUAWEI E220 and how?

I haven't, but google indicates it should be pretty straight forward. See

What is currently showing in /var/log/syslog related to usb devices, when
you plug in the modem?

Have been to http://oozie.fm.interia.pl/pro/huawei-e220/ but so far no
good as it covers kernel 2.6.20 and I am using 2.6.24.
I have sent the an email with my installation error but have not had a
reply yet.
/var/log/syslog is in blank (nothing in it)
Ill keep trying

If you scroll down the site, it has info for kernels > 2.6.19.

Is it actually blank, or are you getting permission denied? Try the
following.

Open a terminal program, such as konsole.
Type in "su -l root", and press enter. Enter the root's password,
when prompted.
Run "urpmi mc", to install a fairly user friendly commandline text editor.
Run "mc -v /var/log/syslog", to see what's in the log. If it really
is empty, post back, and we'll figure out why.
Plug in the usb modem. Exit (press f10) mc, and run it again, press the
end key, to scroll down to the bottom of the log. Copy & paste the usb
output in a post here.
