problems with thunderbird
When I try to open an attachment with a .doc extension, I get the following
message: "such-and-such.doc could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences." I am running thunderbird 2.0.0.4 which came bundled in the purchased Mandriva Spring 2008 DVD (32 bit). When I click on Edit/Preferences/View and Edit Actions, there is no association for the .doc extension. The .doc extension does not exist (only ..zip and .jpg are displayed). When I go to Tools and look for "Options", there is no such subheading. Any help for associating the .doc extension with a program would be appreciated. Jack |

Do you have Open Office on your system? The oo-word processor should handle .doc files quite nicely. Set up an association. At worst, you might have to go to advanced and edit the config file by hand, modeling on the lines for handling zip and jpg files. If you prefer to use the menus, run mcc using Menu, Tools, System Tools, Configure your Computer. In mcc select the Software Management tab, then select Configure media sources for install and update. Select the Add button, then select Full set of sources, and keep selecting yes/ok, till it has added the repositories. Once the repositories have been setup, install openoffice.org, either by running "urpmi openoffice.org" (as root), or using the menus as follows. Run mcc using Menu, Tools, System Tools, Configure your Computer. In mcc, run rpmdrake by selecting the Software Management tab, then Install & Remove Software. Once it's loaded the list of available packages, type "openoffice" (all lowercase, without the quotes) in the search field, and press enter. Then select openoffice.org, Office suite (ooo-build) and click on apply. Regards, Dave Hodgins -- Change nomail.afraid.org to ody.ca to reply by email. (nomail.afraid.org has been set up specifically for use in usenet. Feel free to use it yourself.) |
