Shrinking video files

I have a collection of related video files that I would like to put on a
single DVD, but they total about 150 MB too much. The file extension on
the files is .avi, but I'm not sure of the format - probably Divx. Is
there something available for Mandriva 2008.1 that will let me shrink
those files just a little so they'll fit? I wouldn't mind losing a few
minutes of credits on the end of each file, or I could change the
bitrate a bit. I'd rather use a single app, but I'm flexible enough to
use multiples if necessary. Since I'm not a command line kind of guy
anymore, I'd rather have something with a gui interface, if possible -
and in English would be nice.

Any ideas?

Hi TJ,

Try converting them to MPEG format and compare the size to avi.
If this works for you, then try "mandvd" to make your own DVD.
It does everything menus and all. intuitive too, and worth pursuing.
In 'control your computer' 'software manager' 'add remove software',
Type in 'mandvd' then install it.

It is PLF so you would need this repository.

Or at the command line as root.
# urpmi mandvd.
Hope this helps.

Don.

Have a look at Konverter. It splits, joins, converts, grabs, washes the
dishes. B-)

GUI interface, needs mencoder and transcode all readily available.

One oddity is that I get a Crash Handler popup window when closing the
app but it works fine.

I think MPEGs will end up quite a bit bigger than AVI, especially if they
are Divx already. But give it a try if nothing else works.

Thanks for the responses. They've been very helpful in giving me a
direction for my own research.
