Anyone installed Mandriva on Asus EeePC ?

I was happy to see in the release notes that Md 2008.1 is supposed to
come with all drivers needed for the Eee PC after I ordered two EeePC
900's.
Any problems with installation or configuration to get the MD 2008.1
smoothly
installed ?

Is it possible to install from USB flash memory stick instead of an
external
CDROM ?

I looked at http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Ins...Mandriva_Linux
but couldn't understand how the installation procedure using a
USB drive works. It only says that you are supposed to copy the file
all.img,
which is only 12 MB, to the USB drive and then boot. How does the
full distribution gets loaded ? Shouldn't the entire CD iso be copied
to
the USB drive or does this method use installation from network ?
I'm obviously missing something here.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

The latest edition of LinuxFormat magazine has a 'howto article' on this
very subject. I have to say though, I had the opportunity of trying
Xandros on a 4Gb seven inch screen model. It was very swish. I have also
used XP on another identical machine but I preferred the Linux one. For
compatibility, I would probably prefer Mandriva but unless I was
confident I could back-track, I would delay this.

For work I need to use XP for three applications, so I too would hope that
it may become possible to boot an EEE from a memory stick.

Anyway, best of luck

Alan

Hi, I have installed Mandriva 2008.1 on my EeePC (701 series with 4GB "SSD"
and 1GB ram)
It may be a different case using a 900 or 901. Just google for detail or
browse the excellent Eee forum.

I also tried Ubuntu 8.04 and Suse 11. Others have reported getting Ubuntu
and Suse working but after a few tweaks but Mandriva was the only one that
installed perfectly OOTB with everything working. Have to say it was very
impressive.

The install was onto an SD card not to the SDD. That remains loaded with
Xandros.

I also put Puppy Linux 4 on the SD card to see how fast a small distro might
boot (it also installed really easily) but haven't checked if all functions
are working yet. I happily triple boot but I mainly use Mandriva now.

I installed using a spare CD drive I had and it went without a hitch. (I
didn't buy a dedicated CD drive for the Eee as had plenty of spare CD drives
around and simply used an IDE to USB connector from an external HDD case
enclosure.

Good luck

Re: Anyone installed Mandriva on Asus EeePC ?

I successfully installed Md 2008.1 on my Eee PC after not
too much tweaking. Installation took 3 hours, installing from
a USB memory stick.

I noticed that the artsd and pulseaudio processes seem to consume
a lot of cpu even in idle, 4-10% each. I was wondering if I can switch
off or kill these processes and still have audio working.
In a laptop one should minimize the number of daemons running
in idle.
In Md 2007, which I have running on a desktop, I don't see
these processes so this is something new in Md 2008

Another thing, has anyone got the built-in microphone to work ?
The webcam works. I tried it using ucview, which I built from
source and the video is decent.

Anyone knows what the hald daemon is used for ?

Thanks,
/Karl D

You can disable pulseaudio in mcc/hardware/sound configuration, which will
fallback to alsa, however that should not be necessary. Most problems with
pulseaudio seem to be due to specific applications.

For example, amsn, which can be fixed by removing soundwrapper from the
script that starts wish. See https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=40325
and kppp, which can be fixed by running using pasuspender, like
"pasuspender -- kppp -c account". https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=40714

Can't help with the microphone problem.

Haldaemon (Hardware abstraction layer) detects hardware connections/disconnections,
for hardware recognized according to the rules in the subdirectories under
/usr/share/hal/fdi/, and /etc/hal, and maintains a database of information about
the current hardware. See the output of lshal.

When a device is connected/disconnected, udev uses the information from hal, and
the rules in /etc/udev/rules.d, to execute commands, scripts, or programs from
/lib/udev or /etc/dynamic, to load the appropriate kernel modules, create desktop
icons, handle automounting, etc.

Thanks for your reply,
I haven't disabled pulseaudio yet. I just unchecked
"Run with highest priority (realtime priority)" in KDE control center
and cpu utilization for artsd and pulseaudio both went down.
Still, kded shows between 1-5% CPU even in idle. Is that expected on
a laptop ?
Is kded the main daemon for the KDE window manager ?
In mandriva 2007 I run on a desktop, kded shows nothing but
0% CPU.

Most audio applications I've tried, mplayer, mpg123 works fine with
the pulseaudio enabled but I got errors when trying realplayer.
The error messages said something like: "Cannot connect to
pulseaudio".
Will try it later with pulseaudio disabled.

Dealing with audio in general required one minor tweak on the
Eee PC. The Function keys for volume up/down on the Eee PC worked
fine out of the box. Just had to increase the "line in" gain in kmixer
to
get normal speaker volume. Suspending to RAM caused audio
to be lost on wake up but there is a solution to that posted on
eeepcforum, adding in /etc/pm/config.d/config
SUSPEND_MODULES="$SUSPEND_MODULES snd_hda_intel"
RESTORE_SOUND="yes"

Try unselecting all of the optional Startup services, in kcontrol/KDE Components/
Service Manager, and reenable only the ones you find help, in your day to day
use.

I also disable mdkapplet, kerry/beagle, and draksnapshot-applet.

Try it with "pasuspender -- realplay", which disables pulseaudio, just
for that application.

Thanks a lot,
That was it, I now have very close to 0% CPU utilization in idle.
The main cause of kded consuming cpu seemed to be the "KMilo"
service (special key modifier). Running it causes kded to consume
around 5% CPU constantly and stopping it causes the kded
process to not even show up in the top process list.

I haven't seen any side effects of this yet. Earlier I also had high
cpu
on artsd and pulseaudio, which was resolved by unchecking
"Run with highest priority (realtime priority)" in KDE control center
