Making printer work on 12.1

I have 12.0 up and running and it works fine using the cups thingie. I
have 12.1 up an durnning and printing is a sometime thing. Right now
when I do lpq I get

lpq: error - no default destination available.

I did copy over the /etc/cups directory from 12.0 and also compared
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups. The only change is in the comments.

I am willing to go back to lprng or even lpr if they are easier to
keep up and running. Cups is overkill for my single user single
printer configuration.

I had printing working from KDE yesterday but when I reboot something
goes geflooey. It does not matter whether I am root or a safe user.

Any hints?

fire up a browser and type 'localhost:631' in the address bar.

i doubt there was any need to copy over /etc/cups and rc.cups from your
previous install. better to just go to localhost:631 and reconfigure your
printer. most of the time, all you need to do is click the button 'find new
printers' and then click on 'add this printer'.

As Joost pointed out, you may have to go thru the procedure to set up
the printer in the first place. However, if you have done so, and
cups is confused about the default, try running
lpadmin -d YourPrinterName
as root to set the default printer to YourPrinterName

To see what printers, if any, you have configured, run
lpstat -a

As Joost did not point out, you can use lpadmin to set up a printer
without using the browser interface to cups, but if you don't know the
incantation for your printer it will be much faster to go thru the GUI.

Cheers.

OK your incantation worked. Part of the problem is that I have a Ricoh
AP2600 printer which isn't listed among the models available to cups.
When I try to set it up as raw the cups gui software just goes into a
loop. But I did the above (calling the printer lp of course) and now
enscript will print out a test page.

Been using Slackware since the days when it came on floppies. Some
things get better, others just get more complex.

Thanks to both.

Yeah, I've been using Slackware since version 3.1 (or maybe before).

The move to CUPS was a mixed blessing, in my opinion. In many cases,
it Just Works (TM), but when it doesn't, debugging can be a nightmare.

Cheers.

Did you look here?
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...h-LASER_AP2600

Theres's a ppd file, that goes to /usr/share/cups/model/
then restart cups (if you don't - as I did - it will not work...)

Now your printer should show up in the web-interface configuration, but
you can also directly lead it to the ppd's location.

Good luck
Franz

And apparently you're a slow learner, or retarded. You've been using
Slackware that long, and still can't grasp CUPS? You don't know what a
fucking PPD file is? You can't download and use said PPD file with CUPS
to install a printer in approximately 90 fucking seconds?

Well, that helps to explain things a little.
